The New York State Assembly Republican Counsel’s Office is NOW HIRING and actively seeking applicants to fill the position of Associate Counsel.
This position is ideal for an attorney with courtroom, litigation, prosecutorial, defense, judicial clerkship, or election law interest/experience who is drawn to applying those skills in a fast-paced legislative and public policy environment. The Counsel’s Office serves the Assembly Republican Leader, Assemblymembers, Ranking Republican Members, and Conference staff by providing legal analysis, legislative drafting, policy guidance, and strategic counsel on a broad range of issues impacting New Yorkers.
The Associate Counsel will work as part of a collaborative legal team and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Preparing Counsel Memoranda for assigned Committees and legislation;
- Conducting legal, constitutional, statutory, and policy research;
- Drafting legislation, Sponsor’s Memoranda, legal memoranda, briefing materials, and policy
analysis;
- Tracking legislation and committee activity in both the Assembly and Senate;
- Providing oral presentations and legal analysis regarding legislation under consideration by the
Assembly;
- Assisting with legal and policy matters relating to elections, voting procedures, ballot access,
campaign and constitutional issues, and other areas of public law;
- Monitoring and analyzing current litigation, court decisions, administrative actions, and legal
developments relevant to legislative priorities;
- Communicating with lobbyists, advocacy organizations, State Agencies and Departments
regarding legislation and policy initiatives;
- Assisting with hearings, constituent matters, special projects, and conference initiatives as
assigned.
The ideal candidate will be comfortable working independently, exercising sound legal judgment under pressure, and thriving in both quiet independent work settings and fast-paced, high-energy legislative environments with significant activity and public interaction.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Graduation from an accredited law school;
- Admission to the New York State Bar, pending admission, or ability to waive into the New York
State Bar;
- Prior litigation, courtroom, judicial clerkship, prosecutorial/defense, administrative hearing, or
election law experience strongly preferred;
- Demonstrated interest in constitutional law, election law, public policy, or government affairs
preferred;
- Strong legal writing, research, analytical, and oral advocacy skills;
- Ability to manage multiple assignments and deadlines in a fast-paced environment;
- Willingness to work variable hours during Legislative Session, including evenings and weekends
as necessary;
- Candidates are expected to live and work in the Capital Region of New York.
