The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) protects public health and the environment by

supplying clean drinking water, collecting and treating wastewater, and reducing air, noise, and

hazardous materials pollution. DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility

in the country, with nearly 5,500 employees. DEP delivers more than 1.1 billion gallons per day of

the highest quality drinking water to 8.3 million NYC residents and more than 1 million people in

Upstate New York and has a wastewater conveyance and treatment system capable of processing over

1.3 billion gallons of wastewater per day to protect the environment and the city's surrounding

waterways.

The Bureau of Environmental Compliance's mission is the enforcement of environmental laws and

regulations, which affect the health and safety of the public and environment. Specifically, the

bureau enforces the City's Asbestos regulations as well as the Air and Noise Codes. The Bureau is

comprised of the Division of Air & Noise Policy, Permitting and Enforcement and the Asbestos

Control Program. These divisions respond to; air and noise code complaints; inspect and track

asbestos removal projects; and foster the goals of environmental protection.

Air permitting engineer will work on projects including air permitting, assessments, and compliance

and perform technical duties in support of the New York City Air Pollution Control Program.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct engineering analyses and draft preliminary reports on innovative technologies submitted

to the Department.

  • Review applications for registering and operating combustion and industrial process equipment.
  • Perform on-site inspections of combustion and industrial sources, utilizing testing instruments

to assess equipment for permitting.

  • Create technical reports on field inspections and other regulatory or technical matters.
  • Inspect premises and construction sites to verify compliance with permits, plans, and

specifications.

  • Evaluate installations to ensure adherence to required specifications, plans, and permits.
  • Lead air quality compliance assessments.
  • Oversee and provide expert guidance on air quality projects

Manage industrial source registrations, work permits, and operation certificates, while training

and potentially supervising staff..

Minimum Qualifications

  • A baccalaureate degree in environmental, chemical, mechanical, petroleum, aeronautical, or materials engineering from an accredited college or university and one year of full-time satisfactory experience in environmental engineering work; or
  • A baccalaureate degree in environmental, chemical, mechanical, petroleum, aeronautical, or materials

engineering from an accredited college and master’s degree in environmental engineering from an accredited college.

A master's degree in environmental engineering from an accredited college can only be used to substitute for one year of full-time satisfactory work experience in environmental engineering.

Preferred Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in environmental, Chemical, or Mechanical Engineering - Proficient in technical areas such as modeling, data analysis, program evaluation, planning methodologies, and compliance with federal, NYS, and NYC air quality regulations and standards. - Skilled in utilizing tools like computer modeling, statistical methods, and chemical analysis techniques to evaluate air pollution levels. - Strong expertise in emission control systems and technologies. - Possession of a valid New York State (NYS) Driver's License.
