We are seeking an experienced Automation Manager to lead automation engineering efforts, drive technical excellence, and deliver high-quality solutions from concept through commissioning.
Position Overview
The Automation Manager is a hands-on leadership role responsible for overseeing automation design, programming, integration, and commissioning activities. This individual will play a key role in managing projects, supporting engineering teams, and ensuring successful execution across multiple automation platforms. This role requires both technical depth and leadership capability, with involvement throughout the full project lifecycle. From design reviews and panel builds to field commissioning and client support.
Key Responsibilities
· Lead the design and implementation of automation systems, including PLC, RTU, and SCADA architectures
· Manage and support engineering teams across multiple projects
· Develop and review:
· I/O lists and instrument indexes
· Control narratives and cause & effect matrices
· Panel layouts and system architecture drawings
· Oversee programming, configuration, and commissioning of:
· PLCs, RTUs, HMIs, and network communications
· Standardize and improve automation code, logic, and internal processes
· Troubleshoot and resolve complex control system and network issues
· Support field commissioning efforts and ensure successful project delivery
· Collaborate with:
· Engineering teams
· Shop and field operations
· Supply chain and procurement
· Clients and external stakeholders
· Provide technical leadership and mentorship to automation staff
· Optimize system performance, including PID loop tuning and process improvements
Required Qualifications
· Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Technical field, or equivalent experience
· 7 years of hands-on experience in industrial automation and process control systems
· Minimum of 3–5 years of proven experience managing and leading Controls Engineers and Automation Technicians in a project or operational environment
· Demonstrated ability to lead teams through full project lifecycles (design, build, commissioning, and support)
· Strong experience with:
o PLC, SCADA, and RTU systems
o Industrial networking and communications protocols
o Control panel design and system integration
· Proven ability to troubleshoot and support complex field operations
· Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
· Excellent communication skills with the ability to interface across all levels (clients, field teams, leadership)
Preferred Experience
· Experience with Tier 1 and Tier 2 automation platforms widely used in the energy sector, including but not limited to:
o Allen-Bradley (Rockwell Automation)
o ABB (Totalflow and related systems)
o Schneider Electric (SCADAPack)
o Emerson (ROC, DeltaV and related platforms)
o Siemens, Honeywell, and other major industry platforms
· Oil & Gas / Energy industry experience
· Strong background in multi-platform system integration and migrations
· Instrumentation expertise and familiarity with major manufacturer product lines
· Project management experience with responsibility for scope, schedule, and budget
· Experience building, mentoring, and scaling high-performing automation teams
Work Environment & Expectations
· Hands-on role with a mix of office, shop, and field work
· Travel required: 50% up to 75%
· On-call support as needed for project and operational demands
