Job Description
Chaparral Veterinary Medical Center is looking for an experienced equine technician to join our growing equine practice. This is a full time surgical position 4 day work week and after hours surgical call every third week/weekend of the month. We are a 24 hour referral center for equine, so night weekday and weekend treatments are also included while on surgical duty. After a 90 day probation period benefits that are available include, IRA, health insurance allowance, discount on personal pets, sick, vacation, holiday and CE pay.
We are looking for someone with 3-5 years of equine surgical experience.
Job Duties Include, But Are Not Limited To

Must have valid driver's license and clean driving record.
Must be able to pass background check and drug screening.

Job Duties Include, But Are Not Limited To
Field Work/Exam Assistant
- Properly restraining patients for examination and treatment.
- Set up, trouble shooting, break down of all equipment used in house and in the field.
- Transferring all images taken on equipment to Efilm.
- Sterile joint prep.
- Trotting horses in hand.
- Lunging horses on a lunge line.
- Setting catheter and hanging fluids in field.
- Collect blood from Jugular, cephalic, and saphenous veins.
- Collect and run all lab samples (CBC, chemistry, fecal, fibrinogen, IgG, SAA, blood gas, PCV/TP, blood lactate, abdominal lactate, blood glucose).
- Collect and submit blood work and samples using Idexx vet connect.
- Submission of coggins and health certificates through Global Vetlink.
- Submission of hand written coggins and heath certificates.
- Send out specialty tests, tissue samples, and necropsy to outside labs.
- Be able to trouble shoot lab equipment.
- Read and understand patient charts, perform required treatments, and follow veterinarian’s orders accurately.
- Accurately draw up medications to be given to patients.
- Set up IV fluids
- Calculate fluid rates
- Working knowledge of common drugs, dosages, and frequency
- Using fluid pumps
- Trouble shooting fluid pumps
- Recognizing abnormal parameters in hospitalized patients and notifying intern or doctor on case right away.
- Set up for emergency intake.
- Accurately take a TPR
- Cleaning stalls
- Setting IV and over-the-wire catheters.
- Drawing blood
- Knowing the different blood tubes.
- Maintaining an indwelling NG tube.
- Checking for reflux.
- Place nasal oxygen cannula and secure when needed.
- Chart SOAP notes on patient record and make changes of pain medication, fluid rates, nutritional orders etc. at the doctor’s request.
- Manage critical care cases.
- Perform triage of emergency patients and assess stability of hospital patients.
- Place urinary catheters in patients
- Monitor “ins and outs” of patients.
- Set up x-ray equipment.
- Proper plate positioning.
- Proper marker placement.
- Warming up and use if the 1000 MA x-ray machine.
- Logging all radiographs taken.
- Sending all radiographs taken to efilm.
- Burning CD of images for clients.
- Emailing radiographs to clients and referring’s.
- Admit patients to hospital, making sure that owners/agents have signed a consent form.
- Prepare patients for routine surgeries with clipping, aseptic scrub, IV catheter, leg wrapped, and mouth rinsed.
- All anesthesia and hospital supply drawers fully stocked.
- Monitor patient’s post-surgery.
- Clean, pack, and sterilize surgical instruments; recognize and report missing/broken tools.
- Discharge patients and review home-care instructions with clients.
- Prepare patients for challenging surgeries
- Clean and pack surgery packs, drills, and special equipment
- Be ON CALL and assigned to this duty as regular assignment
- Scrub in and assist in surgery
- Maintain a professional appearance (for example, neat and clean uniform or other appropriate attire).
- Maintain a professional, courteous attitude.
- Attend and participate in all required staff meetings.
- Perform other related duties as directed by the doctors, hospital administrator, or lead technician.
- Attend CE meeting and special events.
