We are seeking an experienced Materials Testing / Geotechnical Project Manager to lead and oversee geotechnical engineering and construction materials testing (CMT) projects throughout the San Diego region. Responsibilities
Project Management & Delivery
- Manage multiple geotechnical and construction materials testing projects from proposal through closeout
- Develop project scopes, budgets, schedules, and resource plans
- Ensure projects are delivered on time, within budget, and in accordance with contract requirements
- Monitor project financial performance, including budgets, invoices, and profitability
- Provide technical guidance for field staff, engineers, and technicians
- Ensure compliance with industry standards (ASTM, AASHTO, Caltrans, local agency requirements)
- Direct materials testing operations including soil, concrete, asphalt, and aggregate testing
- Coordinate field technicians and special inspectors on active job sites
- Ensure quality control, safety compliance, and adherence to project specifications
- Serve as the primary point of contact for clients
- Build and maintain strong client relationships
- Support business development efforts, including proposal preparation and networking
- Identify new project opportunities within existing and prospective clients
- Mentor and supervise junior engineers, technicians, and project staff
- Coordinate cross-functional teams including field, lab, and administrative personnel
- Promote a safety-first culture and enforce company safety policies
- 5–10 years of experience in geotechnical engineering and/or construction materials testing and Special Inspections
- Proven experience managing projects and client relationships
- Strong knowledge of:
- Soil mechanics and foundation design
- Earthwork and grading practices
- Materials testing standards (ASTM, AASHTO, Caltrans)
- Experience overseeing field and laboratory testing operations
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to project sites
- Certifications such as:
- ICC Special Inspector
- NICET (Construction Materials Testing)
- ACI (Concrete Field Testing Technician)
- Experience working on Southern California projects and familiarity with local agencies
- Background in both geotechnical engineering and CMT services
