NRE is seeking experienced Diesel Mechanics to join our team in Mt. Vernon, Illinois. If you enjoy diagnosing problems, rebuilding engines, and working on heavy equipment, this is an opportunity to build a rewarding career in the railroad industry.
As a Diesel Mechanic, you will inspect, troubleshoot, repair, rebuild, and maintain locomotives and diesel engines. All work is performed in accordance with Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), industry, and company standards to ensure safe and reliable operation.
Essential Responsibilities
- Inspect, diagnose, repair, and rebuild diesel locomotives and engines.
- Perform preventative maintenance and mechanical repairs on locomotive components.
- Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, manuals, and technical documents.
- Troubleshoot mechanical systems and identify equipment malfunctions.
- Replace and repair engine, brake, fuel, cooling, and drivetrain components.
- Use hand tools, power tools, precision measuring instruments, and diagnostic equipment.
- Complete repairs in accordance with FRA regulations and company quality standards.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.
- Follow all company safety policies and procedures.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Diesel mechanic experience or completion of a Diesel Technology program.
- Experience working on diesel engines, heavy equipment, trucks, locomotives, agricultural equipment, construction equipment, or similar machinery is preferred.
- Ability to read blueprints, schematics, and technical drawings.
- Strong mechanical troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Commitment to quality workmanship and workplace safety.
Working Conditions
- Shop environment with some outdoor work in varying weather conditions.
- Occasionally work in confined spaces and at elevated heights.
- Frequent standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, bending, crouching, climbing, and lifting.
- Ability to safely perform the physical requirements of the position.
