This is a key leadership role within our organization, collaborating closely with the CEO and executive team to drive financial decision-making, ensure compliance, and provide strategic financial leadership. This is a hybrid position, with three days in the office (Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays) in Walnut Creek, CA.
Position Overview:
The Director of Accounting will lead all financial operations and strategy for Novin Development, Novin Construction, and ProforMap Inc. This includes overseeing financial planning and analysis, managing company audits, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements, and maintaining key relationships with banks, investors, and government agencies. The Director of Accounting will collaborate with the CEO, the DOF and the executive team to set and implement financial goals, manage company cash flow, and guide the financial sustainability of all projects.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Financial Strategy & Leadership
· Collaborate with the CEO and executive team to develop and execute the company’s financial strategy.
· Present financial and tax strategy recommendations to the CEO.
· Lead financial planning and analysis efforts, providing insights and guidance for decision-making.
2. Financial Oversight & Reporting
· Oversee the preparation and analysis of financial statements and reports for Novin Development, Novin Construction, and ProforMap Inc.
· Ensure timely and accurate financial reporting in compliance with all legal and regulatory requirements.
· Manage company audits and ensure compliance with financial regulations and internal controls.
· Oversee cash flow, working capital management, and liquidity planning.
3. Government & Grant Management
· Manage government grant applications and ensure compliance with all relevant funding requirements (e.g., HCD grants, government contracts).
· Lead efforts to monitor and ensure compliance with tax credits, prevailing wage, and other regulators obligations for affordable housing projects.
4. Bank & Investor Relations
· Manage relationships with banks, investors, and other financial institutions.
· Oversee fund management for development projects, ensuring alignment with financial goals and regulatory requirements.
5. Team Development & Technology Implementation
· Hire, train, and mentor construction and development accountants to ensure efficient financial operations.
· Implement and optimize accounting systems and technologies to streamline financial reporting, feasibility analysis, and monitoring.
6. Multifamily & Asset Management
· Oversee multifamily asset management and ensure alignment with financial performance goals for the portfolio.
· Lead efforts in fund management and strategic planning for long-term growth and sustainability.
What You Need to Succeed:
· Experience: 7-10 years of finance experience, with a strong background in affordable housing development, multifamily development, or construction company financials.
· Technical Skills: Strong finance-based analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex financial data and present actionable insights.
· Industry Expertise: Experience with Low-Income Housing Tax Credits (LIHTC), HCD Grant funding, Prevailing Wage requirements, government grants, and compliance with affordable housing.
· Leadership Experience: Proven track record in managing and leading finance teams, with the ability to mentor and develop junior staff.
· Accounting Systems: Experience with QuickBooks Intuit Enterprise and other accounting systems for property management and development companies (e.g., Yardi, Salesforce).
· Compliance Expertise: Deep knowledge of legal and regulatory requirements in affordable housing finance and construction accounting.
· Education: CPA or MBA preferred but not required.
Preferred Qualifications:
· Experience managing funds, including familiarity with CalPERS fund management.
· Previous experience in both startup and mature companies, with the flexibility to adapt to changing financial needs.
· Knowledge of multifamily asset management and fund management in both affordable and market-rate
housing.
Physical Requirements:
· Ability to travel to project sites and across counties as needed.
· Frequent desk-based computer tasks, sitting or standing at ergonomic desks.
· Occasional standing, walking, lifting/carrying objects up to 15 pounds.
· Rarely involves bending, kneeling, or heavy lifting.
