What are the responsibilities and job description for the Summer Camp Teacher position at Norwalk/Stamford Grassroots Tennis & Education?
Norwalk/Stamford Grassroots Tennis & Education is a non-profit organization that provides a year-long afterschool program. We teach youth tennis and provide academic support to create a holistic approach to reaching student athletes in our local community. Our summer camp is a full day program for students ages 9-14 that mixes tennis instruction with traditional camp activities. Grassroots is looking for a Camp Teacher to work with our 9 and 10 year olds in a classroom and camp setting.
Schedule Camp will run from June 29th – July 31st,Monday-Friday 8:15am-4:15pm. There will also be a required day of training in June. Staff will need to commit to all 5 weeks of camp.
This position is non-exempt, and in-person at the Grassroots’ office/youth center in Norwalk, located at 11 Ingalls Avenue.
Responsibilities:
- Plan and lead engaging educational activities appropriate for campers’ age levels
- Teach lessons that combine learning with hands-on, fun camp experiences
- Supervise campers during classes, activities, and transitions
- Adapt instruction to support diverse learning styles, abilities, and interests
- Create a positive, fun, and structured learning environment that encourages participation
- Promote teamwork, creativity, and respectful behavior among campers
- Monitor camper interactions while being able to problem solve and provide mediation
- Maintain organization of materials, classrooms, and activity spaces
Competencies:
- High school diploma/GED
- Experience working with children
- Ability to create lessons/activities for students
- Is able to commit to the whole 5 weeks of the camp including a training day in June
- A commitment to Grassroots’ mission and core values
- Ability to work independently; detail-oriented, well-organized, and ability to adapt to change quickly.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills; ability to solve problems, receive direction and take initiative.
- Works collaboratively, maintains positive attitude and energy.
- Commitment to improving equitable outcomes for children and youth.
- Enthusiastic, patient, compassionate, flexible, and inclusive
- Bilingual a plus (Spanish)
