Summary
The Norton Simon Museum seeks a strategic, collaborative and detail-oriented Director of Facilities to oversee the physical operation of its renowned building and gardens. Reporting to the Vice President of External Affairs, in close collaboration to the Museum’s executive team, the Director of Facilities is an exceptional project manager, with the ability to oversee multiple projects at once and communicate clearly and effectively with staff and contractors at all levels. This position works closely with personnel across the Museum to ensure that exhibitions, public programs, and visitor- and staff-focused activities are supported by a well-functioning facility. This full-time, exempt position oversees a staff that includes engineers, custodians and theater technicians.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Facilities Management, Construction Management or a related field preferred
- At least ten years of facilities experience, preferably at a museum or a cultural or educational organization
- Strong working knowledge of building systems, including mechanical, electrical and plumbing
- Strong computer skills, with proficiency with facilities software, project tracking tools and standard office systems
- Excellent project management and communication skills and strong interpersonal abilities, diplomacy and discretion
- Ability to work in active physical environments, including mechanical rooms and outdoor spaces
- A valid California driver’s license, personal automobile insurance and local residency are required
Responsibilities
- Monitors the appearance of the Museum's building and grounds, and takes necessary corrective actions
- Manages construction projects, selecting and overseeing work of professional trades
- Develops and oversees the department’s budgets; makes recommendations for capital projects
- Assists the curatorial department with the coordination of exhibition and conservation programs
- Assists the security department with art and building security related issues
- Assists the external affairs department with executing major events and programs
- Serves as the primary contact with the City of Pasadena (the property owner) on grounds maintenance issues
- Maintains and organizes records relating to facility projects
- Creates standard operating procedures for the facility and its systems
- Performs special projects as requested by the President or executive leadership
Physical Requirements
This position requires heavy lifting, bending, stretching, reaching, moving objects, extensive walking / standing and manual dexterity.
Schedule
This position is regularly scheduled Monday-Friday, 9:00 a.m.- 5:30 p.m. and requires occasional evening, weekend and holiday hours. Alarms and emergencies may require physical presence at the Museum at any hour. Addressing environmental system alarm notifications using a laptop computer and/or smartphone is necessary.
Compensation
Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience, and includes excellent benefits, including medical, dental, vision and life insurance and a generous pension program.
