Primary Purpose:
Provide gifted and talented instructional services to elementary GT students.  Coordinate the campus program for gifted and talented students. Co-teach with campus teachers, conduct pullout of GT students, and provide campus training to staff.  

 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Master’s degree (preferred)
  • 30 GT Hours
  • Three year’s experience with experience as a gifted and talented teacher
  • Valid Texas teaching certificate with certification as an elementary education
  • A comprehensive understanding and working knowledge of curriculum, instructional, and assessment programs for gifted and talented education.
  • Strong organizational, communication, public relations, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to provide campus level staff development.
  • Knowledge of methods for differentiation of curriculum and instruction for gifted/talented students.
  • Skills in developing materials, lessons and activities specialized for use with gifted/talented students.
  • Skills in teaching model lessons for multiple grade levels
  • Skills of organization required for serving on more than one campus.
  • Skills in working with others in a team relationship in guiding the delivery of gifted/talented services.
  • Skills of effective communication with students and adults, including administrators, teachers, parents and community members
  • Ability to read, interpret testing information, write communications to teachers.
  • Ability to interpret data.
  • Knowledge of strategies and materials for the education of gifted and talented students

 

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

  1. Develop framework for sequenced gifted/talented curriculum based on grade level themes, regular curriculum, and gifted/talented strategies.
  2. Design and teach model lessons in classroom (with follow-up extensions), using strategies recognized as effective for gifted/talented students.
  3. Serve as a resource person for classroom teachers, especially by suggesting and providing resources for open-ended, higher-level thinking, assisting with lesson planning, and working with students.
  4. Create and develop instructional materials appropriate for instruction of gifted/talented students.
  5. Provide quality staff development at the district and campus levels focused on the identification and needs of gifted/talented students as well as the delivery of differentiated instruction for gifted/talented and other high ability students.
  6. Facilitate screening and identification activities and complete identification process.
  7. Provide campus administrators, teachers and other staff members with current research and information on the needs of, and services for, gifted/talented students.
  8. Attend scheduled GT staff meetings.
  9. Attend professional training as set forth by campus and district administration.
  10. Initiate contact with the parents of gifted and talented students to promote good communication and common understanding of district goals and educational philosophy.
  11. Promote parental and community understanding of and involvement in the gifted/talented program.
  12. Facilitate academics teams, such as Destination Imagination and UIL.

  2. Promote campus implementation of the district’s organizational and instructional model for delivery of services to gifted/talented students.
  3. Assist in developing instruction program for eligible students to achieve mastery of the essential GT elements. This may include:
    • Direct Instruction – Provide one-on-one or small group instruction in the regular or in another classroom location. Be available to provide team-teaching or model teaching.
    • Curriculum modification – Assist the regular teacher in selecting objectives and modifying materials, teaching techniques and tests.
    • In-service – Provide professional development, as requested by the campus or district administration.
    • Behavior Management – Assist the regular teacher in developing behavior management tools for gifted and talented students involved in mainstream classes.
    • Evaluation – Assist the regular teach in assessment procedures.
    • Maintain campus GT records and facilitate transfer of those records to the feeder middle school.
    • Attend ARD meetings for students eligible for GT services.

Working Conditions:
Maintain emotional control under stress. Work with frequent interruptions. Must be willing to travel between assigned elementary campuses and central administration. Occasional prolonged and irregular hours. Position requires frequent bending, stooping, twisting, pulling, pushing, overhead reaching and keyboarding.
