Northstar Career Center serves young adults with disabilities ages 16 – 24 to help them gain work readiness skills as they transition into the workforce through a comprehensive array of vocational programs. This role helps create a positive learning environment to facilitate growth of academic, social and career/technical skills of students. The Instructional Assistant is essential to maintaining the small teacher-to-student ratio that is essential in providing quality instruction.

The Instructional Assistant focuses on enhancing student learning experiences by providing individualized support, facilitating classroom activities, and helping manage instructional materials and technology. This position works one-on-one with students aged 16 - 24 both in the classroom and at various community worksites through the school year.

Duties:

• Support and maintain Career Center policies and practices as a member of the Career Center instructional team

• Take initiative in determining how best to complement the teacher’s plans, including providing classroom coverage as needed

• Assist the teacher with the day-to-day instructional program and take initiative in determining how best to complement the teacher’s plans.

• Work with specific students under the direction/supervision of the teacher, including providing individual social and behavioral support

• Transport students to and from community work sites in Career Center vehicles

• Attend five extracurricular events per school year

• Assist with the collection, storage, updating of documentation

Education Requirement:

• High School Graduate

• Prefer some college coursework related education, social work, vocational rehabilitation or related field

Other Requirements

• Valid Virginia driver’s license

Experience:

• Must have 1 year experience or the equivalent working with children and/or young adults.

• Prefer experience working with students with disabilities in an educational or vocational setting.
