The Maintenance Mechanic is responsible for general maintenance and repair requirements as established by the Maintenance Supervisor, Supervisory Healthcare Engineer, or Chief of Engineering, for the Northport NY VA Medical Center. Work includes the maintenance, repair and minor improvement of all buildings and structures, masonry work, plastering and cement finishing work, surface preparation, painting and refinishing of all interior and exterior surfaces, along with various other duties.

Responsibilities:
Major duties include but are not limited to:- Altering, modifying and minor construction of items and structures such as: framework,
staircases, doors' and windows, concrete form building, installing finished paneling and interior and exterior trim, installing metal studded partitions, steel door bucks, metal and wood doors, locksets and related hardware. All types of floor coverings such as vinyl tile, carpet tile, sheet materials, prep area surfaces, and lay out patterns and installing dropped ceilings. - Works with brick, precast blocks of cement, cinder, terracotta wall and finish blocks, glass, quarry tile, marble, ceramic tile, partitions, manholes, catch basins, walks, gutter, foundations for structures. Working with drawings, plans and/or blueprints, layout work, including putting in footings, leveling up first courses to get proper height; leveling sidewalks and floors for an even bed for setting tiles & ceramic finished walls in bathrooms and kitchens including floors.
- Works with the surface preparation and refinishing of all interior and exterior surfaces of buildings, structures, equipment, and furnishings where appearance as well as surface protection is important. Removes old finishes by power-washing, dissolving, burning,
scraping, sanding, wire brushing, and otherwise prepares surfaces for repainting. Prepares coating materials, paints, polyurethanes, stains by mixing and applying pre-coating agents and solvents. Repairs holes and cracks on a variety of surfaces. - Operating and use of a variety of powered and mobile engineering equipment utilized to accomplish station level projects. I.e. Front end loaders, backhoe, tractors, forklifts, dump trucks, pneumatic demolition tools, etc
- Assists journeymen electricians in a wide variety of electrical work, including troubleshooting, installation and repair of electrical equipment
- Assists journeyman pipefitters and performs pipefitting work which involves installing, modifying and repairing new and existing utility systems, such as steam heating, hot water heating, condensation return, domestic hot, cold and hot water, returns, sanitary
waste, medical gases and equipment such as heat, water, condensate and circulating pumps.

Physical Requirements: The incumbent makes repair and installations from step ladders, extension ladders and lifts, in tunnels, that require lifting, pushing, pulling or carrying objects of varying weights, sizes, and shapes, sometimes in excess of 50 pounds. The incumbent is responsible for maintaining and using all safety equipment issued to him/her, i.e., safety glasses, goggles, steel toed safety shoes, and appropriate clothing when in designated areas where required and for promoting and encouraging their use among fellow employees. He/she is subject to strains due to lack of movement such as standing in place, crouching or stooping for extended periods of time.
