Job Title: Plastic Profile Extrusion Operator
Shift (hours): 2nd (M-F 3pm - 11pm)
Shift (hours): 3rd (M-T 9pm - 7am)
Position Summary
The Plastic Profile Extrusion Operator is responsible for setting up, operating, and monitoring extrusion lines to produce high-quality plastic profiles according to customer specifications and company standards. This role involves machine operation, process adjustments, quality checks, material handling, and documentation to ensure safe, efficient, and consistent production.
Key Responsibilities
Machine Operation & Setup
- Set up extrusion machines, tooling, and downstream equipment (calibrators, cooling tanks, pullers, cutters, winders) according to production requirements.
- Start up, operate, and shut down extrusion lines in a safe and controlled manner.
- Load raw materials, colorants, and additives into hoppers and ensure proper blending.
- Monitor machine parameters (temperature, pressure, screw speed, vacuum, water flow) and adjust as needed to maintain product quality.
- Package parts to product specifications.
Quality Assurance
- Perform regular inspections of extruded profiles for dimensional accuracy, surface finish, and defects.
- Use calipers, micrometers, gauges, and other measuring devices to verify tolerances.
- Document quality checks and production data in line with company procedures.
- Identify, troubleshoot, and correct issues related to extrusion quality (e.g., surface blemishes, warping, dimensional variation).
Maintenance & Troubleshooting
- Perform basic machine maintenance such as cleaning dies, calibrators, and filters.
- Troubleshoot extrusion and downstream equipment issues to minimize downtime.
- Report mechanical, electrical, or tooling problems to maintenance or supervisory staff.
Safety & Compliance
- Follow all safety protocols, including lockout/tagout, PPE use, and safe material handling.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area in compliance with 5S and housekeeping standards.
- Adhere to company policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements (OSHA, ISO, etc.).
Qualifications
Education & Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent (GED) required.
- Previous experience in plastic extrusion or manufacturing preferred.
- Basic mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills.
- Familiarity with extrusion machinery, plastics materials (PVC, HDPE, ABS, PP, etc.), and additives is desirable.
Skills & Competencies
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, production orders, and specifications.
- Proficient in using measuring tools (calipers, micrometers, gauges).
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.
- Good communication and teamwork skills.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and stand for extended periods.
Working Conditions
- Manufacturing environment with exposure to heat, noise, and moving machinery.
- Frequent standing, bending, lifting, and walking.
- Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) required.
Performance Metrics
- Compliance with safety protocols.
- Meeting production quotas and efficiency goals.
- Product quality and minimal scrap/rework.
