What are the responsibilities and job description for the CNC Machinist – Mill, 1st Shift position at Northland Plastics, Inc.?
Northland Plastics builds every extrusion die, vacuum calibrator and fabrication fixture we run — in our own toolroom. We're a third-generation, family-owned custom profile extruder in Sheboygan (founded 1953, about 40 people) supplying medical, automotive and industrial OEMs. We're looking for a CNC machinist who wants to spend the day making chips on a mill, not waiting on a queue.
Shift: 1st shift is the primary need. If you'd rather run 2nd or 3rd, tell us — we run around the clock and we'll work with you.
What you'll run
- CNC mill work is the job — setup, programming at the control, and running parts. Our Hurco is the primary machine.
- Tool steel and aluminum, one-off and small-lot: die plates, vacuum calibration tooling, fixtures and replacement components
- Manual mill, lathe and surface grinder for the work that doesn't warrant a program
- Tolerances to ±.001" and tighter; you'll inspect your own work with micrometers, indicators, gauges and a comparator
- Every job is different. No running the same part for three weeks.
What we're looking for
- Real time on a CNC mill — production shop, job shop, mold shop or toolroom all count
- You can read a print, pick your own tooling, dial in workholding and hold a tight tolerance without being walked through it
- Comfortable programming at the control (conversational or G-code); Hurco experience is a plus, we'll train on the control
- Solid shop math and inch/metric conversion
- Technical diploma or apprenticeship is welcome, not required if you can run the machine
- Able to lift 50 lbs and stand for extended periods
Nice to have, not required
- Wire EDM. We have one, and we'll teach you if you want it — it isn't a condition of the offer.
- Experience with extrusion tooling, molds or dies
Pay and benefits
- $30–$36/hour, set by demonstrated skill
- Health, dental, vision and life insurance
- 401(k) with 25% company match on up to 6% of pay (eligible after 90 days)
- Paid time off starting at 10 days, negotiable with experience
- Tuition reimbursement
- 8-hour shifts, 40-hour weeks with occasional overtime — no 12-hour rotations
- Small, senior team. You'll work directly with the owners and the engineers, not through layers.
Why here
Because we design and build our own tooling, the toolroom sets the pace for the whole plant — what you make runs the next day and you see whether it worked. There's room to grow into die design, automation and equipment build if you want it, and we're actively documenting our tooling know-how so what you learn here stays worth something.
