What are the responsibilities and job description for the Outside Parts and Service Representative position at Northland AG & Turf?
Northland AG & Turf and Northland Motorsports is hiring an experienced Outside Parts & Service Representative to grow parts and service revenue across an assigned territory.
As one of the Upper Peninsula's growing equipment dealership groups, we proudly represent industry-leading brands including John Deere, Polaris, Can-Am, Honda, Sea-Doo, Ski-Doo, and more.
Every machine we sell needs parts, maintenance, and repairs for years after delivery. You'll be the person in the field who makes sure that work comes to Northland — visiting farms, job sites, and fleet yards, spotting needs before they become breakdowns, and connecting customers with our Parts and Service teams. If you know equipment, know how to sell, and want a role built on long-term relationships, we want to talk to you.
This is a senior, high-impact role, and we're hiring top talent. The right person combines a parts professional's product knowledge, a service manager's understanding of the shop, and a field technician's eye for a machine — and uses all three to win and keep customers. Strong, verifiable references are a must.
About the Role
This is a field-based aftermarket sales role. You'll call on agricultural, commercial, construction, turf, and government/municipal customers to sell parts, preventive maintenance, inspections, and repairs — then work hand-in-hand with our stores' Parts and Service departments to deliver on every commitment. This role sells parts and service only. When a customer is ready to buy a tractor or other wholegood, you hand that opportunity to the Territory Manager (Outside Sales) covering the account.
- Position: Outside Parts & Service Representative
- Type: Full-time
- Territory: Assigned territory within Northland's market area in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, northern Wisconsin, and northeastern Minnesota
- Reports to: SVP of Outside & Government Sales
- Pay: Competitive base salary commission on parts and service sales
- Travel: Daily travel within territory, typically home each night; occasional overnight travel for training and events
What You'll Do
Territory & Account Growth
- Own your territory: grow parts and service revenue, gross profit, market share, and customer retention against monthly and annual goals.
- Execute a yearly territory plan and target list led by the SVP of Outside & Government Sales, who sets the strategy with input from the Aftermarket Manager and Store Managers.
- Prospect and cold call to win new accounts, including customers running competitive brands.
- Build relationships with owners, fleet managers, shop foremen, and purchasing decision-makers, and hold quarterly account reviews with your key customers.
- Join Territory Managers and store leadership on field visits to key accounts.
- Pursue government, municipal, and fleet accounts, including service agreements and bid opportunities.
- Hand off every wholegood opportunity, such as a tractor, mower, or other machine, to the Territory Manager covering that customer, and keep supporting the account on parts and service.
- Use sales and customer reports to spot trends, find new opportunities, and build action plans to grow the territory.
Parts
- Sell genuine John Deere and allied-brand parts, filters, fluids, wear parts, shop supplies, and attachments.
- Drive sales through John Deere and Northland aftermarket promotions, product demonstrations, and seasonal programs.
- Set up and manage on-site parts-stocking programs for fleet and municipal customers, keeping that inventory accurate and replenished.
- Look up, quote, and order parts using JD Parts, Parts Advisor, and our Dealer Business System.
- Help customers set up and use online parts ordering so reorders stay with Northland.
Service
- Sell preventive maintenance agreements, seasonal and pre-season inspection programs, and planned repairs that grow service labor sales.
- Perform walk-around machine inspections on customer sites to identify parts and service opportunities.
- Recognize mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues well enough to explain them to the customer and write up the right work.
- Prepare parts and service quotes, and recommend the right option: repair, rebuild, or replace.
- Use John Deere connected-machine tools (such as JDLink and Operations Center) to follow machine hours, alerts, and service needs.
- Coordinate repairs, field service calls, and parts deliveries with Service Managers, Service Advisors, and Field Service Technicians.
Customer Experience, Teamwork & Process
- Champion Northland's customer satisfaction program and resolve customer concerns quickly, in person or by phone, until they're closed.
- Follow and help improve Parts and Service department processes so every commitment you make is delivered on time.
- Work with manufacturer representatives on promotions, programs, and product training for customers.
- Track competitor activity and lost sales, and share pricing and market feedback with management.
- Log all customer activity, quotes, and follow-ups in our CRM as they happen.
- Lead customer maintenance clinics and shop-floor product presentations, and represent Northland at field days, open houses, and trade shows.
- Maintain your company vehicle, tools, and samples, and follow all safety rules on customer sites.
- Stay current on John Deere and competitive products through John Deere training, including EDUCATE courses.
