While you won’t be leaping tall buildings in a single bound, during the course of a day, you can expect to evaluate clients for mental, emotional, and behavioral disorders. Diagnose disorders and determines the appropriate course of treatment. You can expect to be responsible for directing and coordinating mental health functions as well as supervising and training staff members as needed.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Perform psychological evaluation for mental, emotional and behavioral disorders. Provide appropriate diagnosis based on history and presenting symptoms and makes appropriate treatment recommendations
- Evaluate clients’ mental status and severity of symptoms in determining the need for transfer to a higher level of care or placement under observation due to suicide risk or inability to adjust within a regular population due to severity of symptoms
- Provide psychotherapy or counseling for the treatment of psychological disorders or mental illness and substance abuse
- Make appropriate referrals as necessary to the inpatient unit, outpatient group therapy, psychiatrist, or other licensed professional who specializes in prescribing psychotropic medication
- Demonstrate an awareness of the psychotropic medications, monitor medication compliance, and makes referrals to the appropriate licensed medical professional should the client exhibit possible medication side effects
- Instruct staff in recognizing mental health and SUD risk factors and subsequent prevention techniques
- Provide in-service education for staff as required. Perform and train staff on crisis intervention techniques as required
- Perform administrative duties in keeping accurate records of client encounters, documenting all services provided, filling out required reports and analyses as required
- Consult with the Physician or Psychiatrist as needed for the proper health care needs of the client
- Participate in the review of the quality of care provided. Ensure that services provided are in accordance with relevant ethical and professional standards of care
- Consult with clinical and administrative supervisors, develop and implement goals and objectives for clinical services provided
- May assist in the development and refinement of facility policies and procedures to ensure that these not only meet recognized standards, but also the institution's general guidelines
- Performs other duties as assigned
Minimum Requirements
D., Psy.D., in Psychology from an accredited university
Current license in Psychology in the state of Louisiana. (Current copy of the license must be on file at the facility at all times.)
