SUMMARY
Develops welding techniques, procedures, and application of welding equipment to problems involving fabrication of metals, utilizing knowledge of production specifications, properties and characteristics of metals and metal alloys, and engineering principles: Conducts research and development investigations to develop and test new fabrication processes and procedures, improve existing or develop new welding equipment, develop new or modify current welding methods, techniques, and procedures, discover new patterns of welding, and substantiate hypotheses. Establishes welding procedures to guide production and welding personnel relating to specification restrictions, material processes, and welding of critical joints. Evaluates new developments in welding field for possible application to current welding problems or production processes. Directs and coordinates technical personnel in performing inspections to ensure workers’ compliance with established welding procedures, restrictions, and standards: in testing welds for conformance with national code requirements; or testing welding personnel for certifications. Weld Engineer will spend 80% of their time on the floor working on weld cells.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Prepare engineering analysis of projects to include: preliminary design, calculation, and life cycle cost and equipment selection.
- Conduct surveys to gather field data.
- Prepare and interpret blueprints, schematic drawings, layouts and other visual aids.
- Prepare technical Welding specifications.
- CAD software use and design as needed
- Manage project issues, budgets, and schedules.
- Review and critique proposed changes to engineering standards, policies, or details.
- Review development plans for compliance with adopted engineering standards and good engineering practices.
- Customer Liaison
- Responsible for quality control. Effective and Efficient Weld Programming (start to finish) – develop and implement weld and laser/camera (Perceptron) Programs.
- Troubleshoot Power Suppliers, Weld Programs, Controllers, and Tooling fixtures.
- Experience Programming Motoman Robots (MRC, XRC, NX,DX) and Panasonic Robots
- Resistance Welding knowledge a must
- Resistance Welding machine set up, parameter development and monitoring
- Pneumatic, electrical, mechanical, and programming repairs.
- Only Authority to make Rework vs. Scrap Decisions.
- Operate within standard operating procedures (SOPs) and Job Safety Analysis (JSAs).
- Communicate with other Shift Supervisors, Welding Engineers/Technicians, Welding Engineering Manager, and Plant Manager.
- Contact Vendors as needed for assistance.
- Assist in production as necessary.
- Other duties as assigned.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide technical presentations to Welding Engineering Manager and Plant Manager
- Function as Project Lead on engineering projects.
- Provide on-the-job training to new staff.
- Provide technical expertise in resistance welding.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS
- Knowledge of Welding. Work requires advanced math skills, special relationship abilities, and the ability to understand "abstract" principles behind math and physics. Working knowledge of Welding techniques and Robotic Programming tools. This is normally acquired through a combination of the completion of a Bachelor's Degree Weld Engineering and/or three to five years of engineering experience.
- Work requires travel to meetings, site visits, and inspections.
- Work requires willingness to work a flexible schedule.
- Knowledge of the manufacturing processes, procedures, and machinery. This is normally acquired through two to five years of manufacturing experience.
- Knowledge of: PPAP; PFMEA; Blueprint reading; QS9000 System; TS16949 System; ISO14001 System; GD & T; Corrective and Preventative Actions.
- Manual dexterity required for operating machinery and computers.
- Ability to lift up to 30 pounds required
WORKING CONDITIONS
Working conditions are normal for a manufacturing environment. Work involves lifting of materials and product up to 30 pounds. Machinery operation requires the use of safety equipment to include but not limited to; eye safety glasses, hearing protectors, work boots, and hardhats. Loose fitting clothes and jewelry are not permitted.
Upper Extremities: Job requires constant use of both upper extremities in handling tools, welding production and working with a keyboard. Must be able to reach/handle from floor to head level.
Lower Extremities: Job requires continuous standing, walking, frequent bending, kneeling, and stooping.
Tool and Equipment: Computer, Gauges, Hand Tools, Hand Truck, Forklift.
Critical Job Demands: Medium Strength Level, continuous use of Upper Extremities, extended periods of standing, walking, bending, and occasional climbing.
Salary : $85,000 - $95,000
