What are the responsibilities and job description for the Welder / Fabricator position at Northern Manufacturing?
1st & 3rd Shift Opportunities Available
Pay: $24–$33/hour
Starting rate based on demonstrated welding and fabrication skills.
At Northern, welding is only part of the job. The real skill is figuring out how to build it. We make custom products, so you’re constantly looking at a print and working through the smartest way to turn it into a finished weldment. What gets laid out first? How should it be fit? What sequence makes the most sense? Is there a better way to tackle it? We’re looking for welders and fabricators who like that part of the job—the thinking, problem-solving, and satisfaction of watching a complicated build come together.
What You'll Do
- Read blueprints, weld symbols, and fabrication drawings.
- Lay out, fit, and assemble custom weldments.
- MIG (GMAW) and TIG (GTAW) weld stainless and carbon steel.
- Work independently through fabrication challenges while maintaining quality and productivity.
- Inspect your own work and make adjustments as needed.
- Work with leads, Quality, Engineering, and other team members to successfully complete jobs.
What We're Looking For
We're interested in welders with strong fabrication skills—not just experience with a particular welding process.
You may be a good fit if you:
- Have welding and/or metal fabrication experience.
- Can read prints and understand how a fabricated assembly goes together.
- Have experience with layout and fit-up.
- Take pride in quality work and can work at a productive pace.
- Are comfortable with variety and learning new jobs.
- Are dependable, safety-minded, and willing to continue developing your skills.
Experience with both MIG and TIG is preferred, but don't rule yourself out if you're stronger in one process. We can help capable fabricators develop additional welding skills through our in-house training program.
Additional premium pay opportunities are available for specialized qualifications such as out-of-position welding, pipe, aluminum, and thin-gauge welding.
Schedule
Opportunities may be available on:
- 1st Shift: Monday–Friday, 6:00am to 3:30pm (45-hours)
- 3rd Shift: Four 10-hour shifts, Monday–Thursday, 7:30pm to 6:00am
Third-shift positions include a shift premium.
Benefits
Northern offers a competitive benefits package, including:
- Medical, dental, vision, life, and short-term disability insurance after 90 days
- Paid time off and paid holidays
- 401(k) with company match after 90 days
- Annual profit-sharing contribution to your 401(k)
- Quarterly bonus opportunities
- In-house welding training and development
