Description
The Fiber Laborer supports day-to-day field operations by assisting fiber construction crews with a wide range of tasks across aerial, underground, new build, maintenance, and repair activities. This includes job site preparation, ground support for installation/maintenance crews, material handling, cleanup, and ensuring safe work areas. The role requires physical labor, attention to safety, and the ability to work in a team under varying outdoor conditions.
Key Responsibilities:
- Site Preparation & Support
- Preparing, cleaning, and organizing the work area.
- General labor support for aerial and underground fiber construction activities.
- Ground support for crews working overhead or with underground operations.
- Digging, basic hand excavation, and assisting with exposing existing utilities as directed.
- Restoring job site areas to meet company and customer expectations.
- Material & Equipment Handling
- Loading, unloading, and organizing materials, tools, and equipment.
- Transporting materials to and from the job site.
- Using basic hand tools such as shovels, picks, and utility tools.
- Supporting crews with staging materials for fiber work (aerial or underground).
- May assist with operating small equipment if trained and approved.
- Assisting Other Workers
- Assisting fiber crew members with daily tasks and job functions as directed.
- Providing general ground support during aerial line work or underground construction.
- Operating hand and power tools as needed.
- Supporting new build, maintenance, and emergency repair activities.
- Safety and Maintenance
- Help identify potential hazards in the field such as utilities, traffic, or unstable ground conditions.
- Ensuring tools and equipment are used safely and properly.
- Cleaning, inspecting, and maintaining tools and equipment as necessary.
- Maintaining safe, organized work zones and complying with company and OSHA requirements.
- Additional Duties:
- Perform other duties as assigned by management.
Qualifications
Required Knowledge & Skills:
- Physically fit and able to work in varying outdoor conditions.
- Ability to lift and carry heavy materials (50–75 lbs.).
- Proficiency with hand tools and willingness to learn additional equipment.
- Understanding of basic construction or utility work practices.
- OSHA 10 certification or willingness to obtain preferred.
- Ability to follow instructions, communicate clearly, and work as part of a team.
- May require certifications or licensure for operating certain equipment.
- Valid driver’s license; Class A CDL preferred or willingness to participate in the company CDL program.
- Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screen.
