JOB SUMMARY

Reporting to the Associate Director of the NU Oakland Department of Public Safety (DPS), the Operations Manager is responsible for the oversight of general DPS operations as well as other duties and projects as assigned

This position will be based out of the Oakland Campus and is primarily a second/third shift position (Evening/Overnight hours).

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education & Training

  • High School Diploma or GED in addition to at least 3 years of proven leadership of a police, security, or public safety function
  • Proven successful leadership of multiple personnel on a campus or multi-use site that is comparable to the Northeastern University Oakland Campus
  • Flexibility to work all shifts, weekends, and extra hours as needed
  • Proficiency with oral and written communication, power point presentations, Microsoft Word, Outlook, and video conferencing platforms.
  • Previous training experience within the police, public safety, or security experience, such as defensive tactics, report writing, active threat, emergency medical response, and other related topics.
  • Valid U.S. Driver’s License
  • Must have CPR and First Aid certification within 6 months of hire
  • Will be required to pass a comprehensive background check, drug screening, and psychological
  • Read, write, and speak English fluently
  • Proven strong attendance and punctuality record
  • Efficient time management techniques & strong organizational skills
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize responsibilities
  • Ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, orally and in writing.
  • Strong computer skills, typing skills, and ability to learn new software

Knowledge of (Supervisory)

  • Supervisory principles and practices
  • Clery Act, Title IX, and the National Incident Management System (NIMS)
  • Current public safety methods and procedures
  • Current criminal codes and laws, and effective investigative techniques and procedures.
  • Safety policies, practices, procedures and requirements of the department, including the Illness & Injury Prevention Plan.

Work Environment & Physical Demands

  • This position is an essential personnel position which may require working in a variety of situations including during holidays, weekends, day/evening/night hours, and in a state of emergency
  • Must be able to: sit or stand for long periods of time; walk, run, climb, bend, stoop and lift weights proportionate with need to perform medical assistance; and operate a motor vehicle
  • Prolonged periods of sitting, standing, walking
  • Bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching
  • Must be able to traverse all types of terrain including up and down hills, and on off road uneven surfaces


Environment:

  • Indoor and outdoor environment. Seasonal heat and cold or adverse weather conditions
  • May be exposed to uncomfortable work spaces such as darkness or poor lighting, dirt/dust, fumes/odors, isolation, mechanical or traffic hazards.
  • May be exposed to unpleasant social situations or hostile community response
  • Must remain calm and be able to deescalate volatile situations


Key Responsibilities

  • The primary responsibility will be to lead the day-to-day shift operations of the Oakland Department of Public Safety (DPS), to include officers, sergeants, administrative, communications, and contracted personnel. This position will ensure adequate shift coverage and scheduling, supervise and evaluate the performance of assigned staff, & ensure all public safety activities are appropriately and timely documented. The Operations Manager will monitor and ensure staff compliance with departmental policies, procedures, and applicable regulatory requirements.
  • The Manager position is expected to understand and perform the same officer responsibilities as needed, to include: patrolling campus, investigating offenses, submitting reports, liaising with local law enforcement, responding to incidents to provide guidance/leadership as needed, responding to community complaints, and conducting shift briefings as needed. The manager position will also monitor the off-campus shuttle schedule and liaise with the shuttle contractor for quality control, complaints, schedule changes, and incidents.
  • This position is expected to promote Public Safety programs within the campus community; develop and maintain internal and external relationships with campus stakeholders, including various departments, student organizations, community groups, and local businesses. The manager will also assist in the development of the department budget and evaluate and recommend new equipment, supplies or special materials to improve security enforcement.
  • The Operations Manager is responsible for assisting with (1) assessing all campus events to determine appropriate security protocols (2) recommending and implementing appropriate protocols and (3) on-site security supervision of special events as needed.
  • This position will be responsible for assisting with the development and implementation of a strategic event security vision & plan for the NU Oakland Campus.
  • Communication Expectations: Availability via phone during off-hours for incident notifications and guidance- individual may be expected to respond to campus in the event of a critical incident or emergency.

Expected Hiring Range:

$82,725.00 - $116,846.25
