The Direct Care Staff provide custody of youth detained at NNJS in a safe, secure, and humane atmosphere in such a manner as to ensure their day to day and moment by moment basic physical, emotional, and physical safety.

Schedule: Variety of shifts available (Thursdays - Sundays preferred)

  • 6:00am - 2:00pm
  • 2:00pm - 10:00pm
  • 10:00pm - 6:00am

Essential Job Functions

  • Maintain security to assure that resident escape is prevented and staff and/or resident injury is minimized.
  • Inspect premises for security hazards and take appropriate action to remove any hazards.
  • Carry and safeguard keys and radio.
  • Keep designated areas locked.
  • Be alert to any resident escape plans and report plans to supervisors.
  • Employ appropriate verbal and physical intervention, when necessary.
  • Maintain a strong knowledge of facility evacuation plans and procedures.
  • Conduct resident/facility searches and shakedowns.
  • Manage resident’s behavior within the guidelines, scope, and philosophy of NNJS by utilizing a variety of techniques and approaches in an effort to elicit positive behavioral results.
  • Intervene in altercations, assaults, or confrontations between residents using de-escalation techniques which are calming, non-judgmental, and non-abusing.
  • Assist volunteers facilitate resident groups as directed by the Program Coordinator or Supervisor.
  • · Serve as the primary administrator of NNJS’s behavior management program for each youth in assigned area.
  • Respect and maintain confidentiality of residents and staff.
  • Prepare written reports accurately, factually, concisely, promptly, and objectively, as directed.
  • Document activities and incidents as necessary through use of incident reports, daily logs, shift reports, etc.
  • Attend all staff meetings, conferences, and trainings as directed by Administration and Supervisors.
  • Write clear and concise resident daily logs with an emphasis on behavioral observations.
  • Listen effectively to residents.
  • Supervise and instruct youth in appropriate personal hygiene practices.
  • Provide general first aid care to residents as directed by medical staff.
  • Maintain the cleanliness of areas according to the post-orders described on each shift.
  • Perform special assignments as requested by the Supervisor, Program Coordinator, or Administration.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

Skills and Education

  • High school diploma or GED, required.
  • Ability to conduct behavior in such a way that your behavior is a model to be emulated by residents.
  • Capabilities to physically restrain and transport a juvenile to a segregation room with the assistance of one or two co-workers by correctly using physical interventions such as Tact II.
  • Effectively deals with behavioral problems in the areas of mentally ill, mentally challenged, behaviorally impaired, behaviorally disabled, minority cultures, and spiritual needs.
  • Ability to understand and empathize with residents as they deal with the stress of detention.

Qualifications

  • Must be at least 19 years of age or older.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen
  • No history of child or adult abuse, neglect, physical or sexual assault, or inappropriate behavior towards children.
  • Free of felony convictions or other crimes punishable by imprisonment in a federal or state penitentiary for a term of one (1) year or more for which a pardon has not been received.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, use hands to handle or feel, reach with hands or arms, talk, or hear. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. The employee must be able to lift and/or move up to 30 pounds occasionally. The employee must be able to lift, pull, bend, or physically restrain a combative or injured inmate weighing 165 lbs.
