Position Summary
Northeast is a small district with a strong school community. The High School Counselor is an important part of the supportive environment we work to create. The counselor collaborates to support students in achieving academic success, college and career readiness, and social-emotional well-being. This role involves providing guidance, counseling services, and coordination of programs that help students plan for their futures while addressing personal and academic challenges.
Key Responsibilities
Academic Support
- Assist students with course selection, scheduling, and graduation requirements using JMC, the student information system
- Monitor academic progress and intervene when students are at risk
- Collaborate with teachers and administrators to support student achievement
College & Career Readiness
- Guide students through college, career, and postsecondary planning
- Assist with college applications, scholarships, financial aid (FAFSA), and career exploration
- Collaborate to organize college visits, career fairs, and informational sessions
Social-Emotional Support
- Provide individual and group counseling services
- Support students dealing with personal, behavioral, or social challenges
- Identify and refer students to outside services when needed
Crisis Intervention
- Respond to student crises and provide immediate support
- Collaborate with families, staff, and community agencies in crisis situations
Program Development & Coordination
- Implement a comprehensive school counseling program aligned with state and national standards
- Use data to inform and improve counseling services
- Lead or support initiatives related to student wellness, bullying prevention, and mental health
Collaboration & Communication
- Communicate regularly with parents/guardians regarding student progress and needs
- Work collaboratively with teachers, administrators, and support staff
- Participate in IEP/504 meetings as appropriate
- Ensure state requirements are met for graduation including 4 year plans
- Lead course planning, registration and scheduling
- Coordinate scholarship applications and co-plan awards for seniors
