Cultural Arts Instructor-- Summer Camp

Join our amazing team as a Cultural Arts Instructor. This position is responsible for teaching assigned classes in a designated program area, within established program guidelines and while providing the proper guidance and support for each participant. Class instruction may vary based on level of expertise of students/attendees and age range of students/attendees. May instruct classes for children through adult age. Demonstrates commitment to the Mission, Vision and Guiding Principles of the District.

 

Pay & Schedule:
$17.00 - $19.00 per hour

This is a part-time, non-exempt position.

June 8 - July 31 Monday - Friday 8:00 AM - 3:30 PM

Anticipated Start Date: June 2nd

 

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Develops and implements lessons or schedule supporting the established program curriculum.

  • Actively engages all campers and provides support and constructive feedback.

  • Arrives before class start time to inspect instruction space, set-up equipment and supplies if needed and greet students.

  • Plans and organizes class routines, projects, performances, recital(s), when required.

  • Diligently follows and adheres to all safety policies and procedures.

  • Collaborates with internal and external customers in a positive manner.

  • Follows safe work practices.

  • Attends trainings and meetings as required.

  • Supervises a group of children, 8 to 14 years of age, throughout daily activities, including lunchtime.

  • Closely monitors morning drop off and afternoon sign off process (attendance).

  • Diligently plans and implements daily art activities, both active and passive, in the areas determined by the Site Director.

  • Actively provides campers with a positive camp experience while monitoring the care and safety of each child through active participation in all aspects of the program. Activities include but are not limited to sports, games, arts and crafts, swimming (summer camp), and field trips.

  • Professionally acts as liaison between the parents, children and Site Director in a courteous and positive manner.

  • Diligently follows and adheres to all safety policies and procedures, policies set forth in the Employee Handbook and other program manuals, policies, and procedures issued by the Northbrook Park District.

  • Routinely keeps the program site neat and clean and all equipment and supplies in good order.

  • Participates in staff meetings and all orientation and training sessions.

  • Routinely assists with implementing severe weather and crises management procedures when needed.

  • Wears a Northbrook Park District staff uniform at all times when on duty.

  • Collaborates with internal and external customers in a positive manner.

  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Degree from four-year college or university with major course work in the subject area being taught or supplemented by four (4) years teaching experience or experience working in the program area; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the following knowledge, ability and skills.

 

Skills & Abilities

  • Lead and interact positively with children and adults

  • Teach through demonstration of specific subject matter being taught

  • Can work independently and efficiently

  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing

  • Work with co-workers and the public in a professional manner during stressful situations

  • Become CPR/AED Certified

 

Knowledge

  • Thorough knowledge of subject material being taught

  • Hands-on experience working with children

  • District safety policies and procedures

  • Work is performed primarily in an indoor classroom/studio, ice rink or outdoors. Employee may be exposed to cold temperatures and to quick changes in temperatures. The employee may work outdoors in varying weather conditions.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand for long periods of time and use arms and hands to demonstrate subject matter.

  • The employee is frequently required to walk; sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and smell.

  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

  • Specific vision abilities required by this job includes close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
