Extensive interaction with patients, families, hospital employees, physicians, and community resources necessitates strong human relations skills.
Job Functions
- Assesses the psychosocial, emotional, and developmental needs of patients to develop individualized care plans.
- Prepares children for and assists children during medical tests and procedures.
- Uses therapeutic and medical play, to educate and explain procedures, reducing fear and increasing understanding for children.
- Implement non-pharacological pain management techniques, including distraction, relaxation, and guided imagery during treatment.
- Acts as an advocate for the patient, working closely with doctors, nurses, and social workers to promote emotionally safe care.
- Supports families during hospital stays or challenging events.
- Participates in patient/family teaching about hospital and/or procedures
- Maintain accurate, timely documentation of interventions in the electronic medical record.
- Attends in-service education programs, staff conferences, community resource meetings, and workshops.
- Performs work assignment according to rules and regulations.
- Assumes additional duties as needed.
Education
- Bachelor's Degree Child Development, Psychology or a related field. Required
- Master's Degree Child Development, Psychology or a related field. Preferred
- CCLS - Certified Child Life Specialist. credential by the Association of Child Life Professionals (ACLP. Upon Hire. Required
- 1-3 years. Minimum of 1 year experience in hospital-based child life program.. Preferred
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
- Must be knowledgeable of basic medical terminology and major medical diagnoses.
- Must be knowledgeable of the principles of growth and development for pediatric population
- Must work independently with minimal guidance and supervision
- Strong communication, emotional intelligence, and ability to work in a fast-pace, high-stress environment
- Must work cooperatively and collaboratively with clinical/medical staff, manager,and other discipline toenhance l services to patients/families.
- Must develop good working relationships with patients and their families.
