Job Title: Assistant Middle School Basketball Coach School: Hawthorne Brook Middle School (North Middlesex School District) Job Description: The North Middlesex School District is seeking a dedicated and supportive Assistant Basketball Coach for the Hawthorne Brook Middle School (HBMS) basketball program. The assistant coach will support the head coach in developing middle school student-athletes in grades 5–8, focusing on skill development, teamwork, and sportsmanship while fostering a positive and inclusive environment. The ideal candidate will provide guidance, mentorship, and instruction in basketball fundamentals and help the team prepare for practices and competitions. Key Responsibilities: Support Athlete Development Assist the head coach in planning and conducting practices that emphasize fundamentals, conditioning, and teamwork. Provide individualized instruction to help student-athletes improve skills, including shooting, passing, dribbling, defense, and game awareness. Encourage positive attitudes, effort, and resilience in all athletes. Game & Practice Assistance Help organize lineups, substitutions, and rotations during games. Support warm-ups, drills, and game strategy execution. Supervise student-athletes during practices, games, and travel. Mentorship & Team Culture Serve as a role model, promoting responsibility, respect, teamwork, and sportsmanship. Support the head coach in reinforcing team rules, expectations, and goals. Help build confidence, leadership, and self-esteem among players. Communication & Collaboration Maintain open communication with the head coach, athletes, parents, and school staff. Collaborate with the head coach to ensure consistency in coaching methods, philosophy, and team culture. Report any concerns regarding player safety, attendance, or behavior to the head coach. Safety & Compliance Ensure a safe environment during practices, games, and travel. Follow North Middlesex School District, MIAA, and NFHS rules and guidelines. Comply with concussion management, First Aid/CPR protocols, and CORI/SORI background checks. Qualifications: Required: Knowledge of basketball fundamentals, rules, and basic strategies. Ability to mentor and motivate middle school athletes. Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills. Must meet all district and MIAA coaching requirements. Preferred: Previous coaching experience at the middle or high school level. Playing experience at the high school or collegiate level. Experience developing young athletes in both athletic and personal growth.
