POSITION: CTE Student Support Specialist
LOCATION:
SALARY: Teacher Salary Schedule Local Supplement (position is not eligible for National Board pay)
TERM OF EMPLOYMENT: 100% 10-month position
REPORTS TO: School Administration
JOB GOALS: The primary purpose of the CTE Student Support Specialist, is to ensure accountability for services to students within Career and Technical Education’s special populations categories, in programs funded under the Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Act. Services are provided for special populations to promote: 1) equal access to CTE programs and activities; 2) student success throughout the program; and 3) ease of transition to post-secondary pathways.
QUALIFICATIONS & ATTRIBUTES:
- Eligible to obtain the Special Populations Coordinator (SPC) license 770
(Requirements to obtain the 770 license)
- Successful Teaching Experience (minimum of 5 years preferred)
- Knowledge of Career and Technical Education and/or Exceptional Children programs
- Experience working in Career and Technical Education and/or Special Education
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Strong organization and time management skills.
- Knowledge of innovative and research-based practices to improve student achievement.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist schools and CTE administrators in identifying programs that need improvement to assist special populations’ students in meeting the performance indicators.
- Assist schools and CTE administrators in providing strategies to improve supplementary services for members of special populations in meeting the performance indicators.
- Maintain relevant record keeping and inventory systems related to job responsibilities.
- Coordinate with schools, CTE administrators, and other service providers to develop an annual plan of work based on the evaluation and needs assessment results to ensure that students within special populations are receiving adequate supplementary services and career planning.
- Identify students within special populations each semester, and provide the information to CTE teachers.
- Coordinate with Career Development Coordinator (CDC) to assess the characteristics of students using interest inventories, learning style assessments, or similar instruments.
- Develop, implement and monitor the CDP with input from the CTE teachers.
- Participate on the IEP Team for students enrolled in CTE courses, as needed, in the development and implementation of the CTE and transition components of the IEP.
- Coordinate special services for special populations students and assist with transition services for special populations students.
- Maintain a CTE resource center for members of special populations and CTE teachers.
- Collaborate with CTE teachers and other relevant service providers in providing services to special populations students.
- Coordinate with data managers, CTE Program Specialists, special education, vocational rehabilitation, community agencies, business/industry, and others to provide supplementary services to members of special populations.
- Facilitate in-service training, resources & strategies for school personnel working with students within special populations to improve their abilities and techniques in meeting the special needs of these students.
- Coordinate career development experiences and educational trips for special populations students where appropriate.
- Monitor district, school, and course demographic and achievement data to assist in determining maintenance and improvement of access, progress, and success of students within special populations in CTE programs.
- Coordinate with CDC, counselor, CTE teachers, and CTSOs to promote recruitment, enrollment, and placement activities for special populations students in CTE.
- Provide information about CTE opportunities to special populations students and their parents.
- Attend workshops, trainings, and conferences designed to enhance job performance.
- Participate in PLCs in the school, district, region, and state, including school-level CTE, Exceptional Children, and Student Services PLCs, and the district-wide CTE Student Support Specialist PLC.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of fingering, grasping, kneeling, sitting, walking, stooping, reaching, lifting, pushing, talking, seeing, hearing, and repetitive motion.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Must possess a valid North Carolina driver’s license.
- Strong interpersonal relationships with students, staff and parents.
- Ability to communicate effectively in written and oral forms.
- Ability to develop and compile a variety of records and reports.
- Strong commitment to championing equity, access, and inclusion of diverse populations.
