Position Overview

Primary Purpose Of Position

The Department of Communication Sciences & Disorders, within the Hairston College of Health and Human Sciences at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, is seeking an assistant/associate professor whose teaching and scholarly research agenda is focused on Speech Language Pathology. Specifically, candidates must have a strong background in adult language disorders, neurogenic disorders, and dysphagia. The primary purpose of this role is to provide student-centered teaching of undergraduate and graduate level courses and scholarly products in the area of expertise. Faculty in this role will also participate in student advising, student mentoring, recruitment, curriculum development, and engage in program assessment and accreditation-related procedures. The ideal candidate will be expected to: (i) establish and sustain a strong externally-funded research program in their field of expertise; (ii) produce an excellent record of scholarly publications; (iii) incorporate modern pedagogical skills in speech language pathology courses; (iv) supervise student research projects; and provide service to the Department of Communication Sciences & Disorders, the college, and the university as well as to appropriate community and professional organizations.

This is a 9-month, tenure-track position ot hired at the rank of Assistant Professor or Associate Professor.

The John R. and Kathy R. Hairston College of Health and Human Sciences ( HCHHS ) comprises six departments and the School of Nursing. The HCHHS offers the following undergraduate degree programs: Communication Sciences and Disorders, Health Services Management, Kinesiology, Nursing, Psychology, Social Work, and Sociology. At the graduate level, HCHHS offers four graduate degree programs, including the Master’s in Physician Assistant Studies (PA program), Master of Social Work ( MSW ), MS in Health Psychology, Ph.D. in Social Work, PhD in Applied Psychology, and Doctor of Nursing Practice ( DNP ). The HCHHS is also home to the Center of Excellence in Integrative Health Disparities and Equity Research ( CIHDER ), a hub for multidisciplinary research and community engagement efforts to alleviate health inequities. The HCHHS capitalizes on synergies among these departments to develop advanced academic programming, enhance trainee mentoring, and conduct collaborative multidisciplinary research and scholarly activity.

The Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders ( CSD ) has two areas of emphasis: (i) Speech Language Pathology and Audiology and (ii) Health Communication Studies. The Department of CSD is a supportive community of committed faculty and practitioners whose goals are to introduce students to the ideas and concepts relevant to this discipline, encourage interdisciplinary learning, prepare students for study in graduate schools, prepare students for entry-level jobs requiring knowledge in CSD fields, and train students to conduct both basic and applied research. These goals are reached through quality classroom instruction, departmental colloquia, departmental student organizations, practicum/internship opportunities, and individualized research projects. The Department of CSD has 180 enrolled undergraduate students. The department is seeking candidates to join a growing program with a highly interactive and productive faculty.

Minimum Requirements

A PhD or Doctorate in Speech Language Pathology or Communication Sciences and Disorders (and/or CSD -related discipline) with a significant research track record.

  • Ability to establish and sustain a strong research enterprise, and have pedagogical skills to teach in areas relevant to Speech Language Pathology

Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education

  • Prior teaching experience in baccalaureate and/or graduate Communication Sciences and Disorders department (preferred area of Speech Language Pathology)
  • Experience designing and teaching evidence-based undergraduate and graduate courses in Speech-Language Pathology, including clinical foundations and/or specialty content areas
  • Expertise in clinical education, including supervision of graduate clinicians in university clinics, schools, medical settings, or community-based placements
  • Knowledge of and experience with ASHA standards, accreditation requirements, and competency-based clinical education models
  • Demonstrated ability to integrate research, teaching, and clinical practice
  • Evidence of interdisciplinary collaboration with faculty in health sciences, education, psychology, public health, neuroscience, or related fields
  • Experience incorporating technology, simulation, and/or AI-supported tools into teaching, research, or clinical training
  • Ability to contribute to program development, including new courses, certificates, concentrations, or clinical initiatives
  • Experience with community-engaged scholarship, service-learning, or partnerships with schools, healthcare systems, or community organizations

Required License Or Certification

  • ASHA (CCC’s certification) and NC Board of Examiners in SLP / AUD Required
