The Exceptional Student Education Teacher plays a key role in advancing our mission of inspiring global citizens to create their future and live with purpose. This educator supports students with learning differences who are enrolled in our Lighthouse Point Academy (LPA) program, helping them access rigorous content while building confidence, independence, and academic skill.

North Broward Preparatory School , Coconut Creek, FL


JOB PURPOSE 

The ESE Teacher works collaboratively with classroom teachers, divisional leadership, support staff, and families to support students’ academic, social, and emotional growth within the learning environment. This role focuses on providing differentiated instruction, implementing accommodations, designing and monitoring targeted interventions, and helping students access rigorous, grade-level curriculum in meaningful and supportive ways. 

 

Aligned with our vision of being a world-leading community of learners, the ideal candidate is a strong classroom teacher with experience supporting students across a variety of middle and/or upper school content areas and learning profiles. Candidates should demonstrate a strong understanding of learning differences and training or certification in ESE, secondary education, or a related field is strongly preferred.  

 

This role requires a collaborative mindset, strong instructional planning skills, and the ability to support executive functioning development while partnering closely with families and faculty to help students thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. 

  

ENGAGEMENT AND INTERACTION 

  • Maximize the individual successes of our diverse group of learners 
  • Plan and manage curricula, units, lessons, assignments 
  • Adapt to changing work priorities 
  • Promote the educational and social-emotional development of students 
  • Stay up to date with educational strategies that support differentiation and student success 
  • Support exceptional students who require academic or other support and partner with students, parents, teachers and outside professionals in developing and implementing personalized support plans. 
  • Maintain a differentiated classroom that supports students with diagnosed learning differences as they navigate accommodated grade-level curricula as well as periodic remediation. 
  • Create a positive school climate for students, staff, and the community by collaborating with professional peers in academic learning support and enrichment 

LEARNING AND TEACHING 

  • Interpret Neuropsychological Educational Evaluations to support students with accommodations  
  • Support teachers in understanding the elements of a student’s Neuropsychological Educational Evaluation and what it looks like in classroom practice 
  • Review accommodations each trimester for assessment needs 
  • Teach whole class, individual, and small group lessons 
  • Develop systems to facilitate executive functioning and productivity 
  • Support behavioural and academic intervention planning and implementation 
  • Offer highly developed presentation skills 
  • Monitor student progress and report information (grades) in a timely manner 
  • Exercise good classroom management with the use of fair and consistent standards and appropriate sanctions that are clearly articulated to the students 
  • Encourage students to ask questions and to express their difficulties. 
  • Know and use a wide range of assessment strategies consistent with course content and objectives. 

 

PLANNING AND PREPARATION 

  • Differentiate instruction and assessment to meet the diverse needs of students 
  • Understand all elements, goals, instructional best practice strategies, embodied in the academic plan, as well as the ability to clearly articulate the plan to parents and students. 
  • Showcase highly developed collaborative leadership skills and the ability to work well with others 
  • Implement the established curriculum as described in the NBPS curriculum maps 
  • Maintain and update curriculum maps on Atlas Rubicon 
  • Select and plan appropriate learning and teaching activities that are in alignment with NBPS standards and the Academic Plan 
  • Provide opportunities for student expression using spoken, written, and artistic forms of communication. 
  • Develop lessons that engage students in higher order thinking (refer to Bloom's Taxonomy). 
  • Provide a safe learning environment in which students can take intellectual risks. 
  • Use learning resources and technology to enhance lessons where appropriate 
  • Create a stimulating and challenging learning environment with effective use being made of classroom displays. 
  • Develop student cooperation and tolerance through group work 
  • Create an environment that fosters a growth mindset. 
  • Create an atmosphere of mutual respect. 
  • Assist students in taking responsibility for their own actions. 
  • Maintain student portfolios and facilitate student led conference following division requirements

PERSONAL SPECIFICATIONS 

  • Experience and certification in Exceptional Student Education, K–12 Education, or a related field 
  • 3  years experience working in a school-setting 
  • Experience working in special and/or exceptional student education. 
  • Ability to read, understand, and interpret psychoeducational evaluations 
  • Ability to build rapport with school-age students 
  • Commitment to building an effective partnership with parents and students 
  • Excellent time management skills and flexibility in dealing with multi-functional tasks. 
  • Good cross-cultural, interpersonal, and communication skills to interact with diverse nationalities and cultures.
