JOB SUMMARY

The Choir Teacher is responsible for developing students’ understanding and appreciation of music through vocal performance. This includes teaching music theory, voice techniques, sight-reading, and performance etiquette, as well as organizing concerts and events. The teacher is expected to create an inclusive, supportive, and engaging learning environment that promotes artistic growth and student achievement.

 

Reports to: Building Principal

 

Supervises: None

 

Pay Grade: Teacher’s Salary Scale

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Plan and implement a balanced vocal music program that includes instruction in music theory, voice technique, sight-reading, and choral repertoire.

  • Direct and accompany school choirs for rehearsals and performances, including school concerts, community events, and competitions (e.g., MSHSAA festivals).

  • Select appropriate music literature to match students’ skill levels and interests while ensuring alignment with curriculum standards.

  • Foster an appreciation for music and encourage participation in school music programs.

  • Assess student progress and provide meaningful feedback through both formative and summative assessments.

  • Maintain accurate records of student attendance, grades, and progress.

  • Collaborate with other staff members to integrate music into interdisciplinary learning opportunities when appropriate.

  • Communicate effectively with students, parents, and colleagues.

  • Manage classroom behavior and establish a positive, respectful learning environment.

  • Organize and maintain music materials, instruments, and classroom space.

  • Comply with all district policies, procedures, and state and federal regulations.

 

Other functions of the job include but are not limited to the following:

  • Demonstrate preparation and skill in working with students from diverse cultural, economic and ability backgrounds.
  • Encourage parent and community involvement, obtain information for parents when requested, promptly return phone calls and answer emails.
  • Participate in appropriate professional activities.
  • Participate in extracurricular activities such as social activities, sporting activities, clubs and student organizations as directed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Knowledge and implementation of relevant technology.
  • Meet professional teacher education requirements of school, district and state.

 

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION

  • Bachelor’s degree in Music Education or related field from an accredited college or university.

  • Valid Missouri Teaching Certificate in Vocal Music (K–12 or 9–12 depending on grade level taught).

  • Demonstrated proficiency in vocal pedagogy, choral conducting, and piano accompaniment.

  • Strong classroom management and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to organize and lead performances and music-related events.

  Preferred: 

  • Master’s degree in Music Education or related field.

  • Experience teaching in public schools or with diverse student populations.

  • Familiarity with MSHSAA music competition procedures and requirements.

  • Ability to arrange music and accompany choirs as needed.

Occasionally the employee will lift up to 50 lbs., such as lifting files and paper.
