Overview:
Provides in-home, community-based support to individuals with chronic mental illness. Works under a Recovery Plan to promote independence, daily living skills, and community integration through guidance, cueing (not hands-on care), and supportive engagement.
Key ResponsibilitiesDaily Living & Household Support
- Assist or cue clients with:
- Meal planning, grocery shopping, and food storage
- Housekeeping (laundry, cleaning, organizing)
- Basic home management (temperature control, bill reminders)
- Personal hygiene and grooming (verbal prompting only)
Health & Wellness Support
- Encourage:
- Medication adherence (self-administration support)
- Use of medical/dental services
- Healthy habits (nutrition, exercise, stress management)
- Appropriate use of emergency services
Social & Community Engagement
- Support participation in:
- Social, recreational, and family activities
- Community resources (clubs, faith-based supports)
- Appointments (medical, vocational, legal, educational)
Behavioral Guidance
- Help clients avoid:
- Risky behaviors (unsafe relationships, unsafe driving, etc.)
- Substance abuse
- Overspending and conflict situations
Client Support & Relationship Building
- Provide companionship and emotional support
- Engage in problem-solving discussions
- Escort clients to appointments and activities
Care Coordination & Documentation
- Participate in Recovery Plan development and updates
- Communicate with care teams and community providers
- Complete accurate and timely documentation
Professional Development
- Complete required annual training (6 hours/year)
- Maintain Recovery Assistant certification
Qualifications
- Minimum age: 18
- High school diploma or GED
- Valid driver’s license reliable vehicle
- Basic computer skills (Microsoft 365, web platforms, Adobe PDF)
- Pass multiple background checks (state, national, DMV, etc.)
- Complete DMHAS certification (required for hire)
- Preferred: Experience with mental health and in-home care
