Recovery Assistant – Job Summary

Reports To: Director of Community-Based Services

Role Overview

The Recovery Assistant provides flexible, face-to-face supportive assistance based on an individual Recovery Plan. This role enables clients with chronic mental illness to maintain their independent living situation, utilize natural supports, and actively engage in social and community activities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Daily Living & Home Support: Assist with or cue clients in meal planning, grocery shopping, housekeeping, basic household tasks, personal hygiene, and emergency medical services.
  • Skill Building & Engagement: Encourage client participation in social/recreational activities, medical/dental appointments, medication self-administration, healthy habits, and appointment adherence.
  • Risk Reduction & Guidance: Help clients avoid risky behaviors, substance abuse, overspending, and unnecessary conflicts through supportive problem-solving discussions.
  • Companionship & Advocacy: Escort clients to appointments and community activities, foster positive relationships with community providers, and complete required documentation.
  • Professional Development: Complete 6 hours of annual continuing education to maintain the Recovery Assistant Certification.

Key Qualifications

  • Education & Experience: Minimum of a high school diploma or GED; must be at least 18 years old. Experience working with clients with chronic mental illness and in-home care is preferred.
  • Transportation: Valid Connecticut driver’s license, reliable roadworthy vehicle, and proper automobile insurance.
  • Certifications & Training: Must successfully complete the DMHAS Recovery Assistant training program.
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in Microsoft 365, web platforms, and Adobe PDF.
  • Clearances: Must pass national, state, motor vehicle, CT DCF, and multi-state background checks, along with a physical exam and negative PPD results.
