What are the responsibilities and job description for the Relief Block Operator position at NJ TRANSIT?
Work Location: Atlantic City Beach Bridge
Roles and Responsibilities:
- Reports to Manager, System Operations or other designated Officer as directed.
- Responsible for care of block and interlocking stations, bridges, and arranging the use of blocks, tracks, interlocking switches, and signals.
- Responsible for prompt movement of trains in accordance with rules, Form D’s, and special instructions.
- Maintain accurate records of train movements.
- Operate the opening and closing of bridges.
- Provide clear communication to Dispatcher on marine radio.
Education, Experience and Qualifications:
- Valid driver's license.
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Pass NJ Transit’s Clerical Test.
- Upon acceptance of the position, must pass NORAC testing and obtain NORAC certification.
- Successfully pass pre-screening processes, including drug test, physical exam, and criminal, employment, and driving background checks.
Knowledge and Skills:
- Strong ability to read and interpret regulations, procedures, and operational guidelines.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to interact effectively with others in potentially high-pressure or emergency situations.
- Ability to make independent judgments, using sound reasoning and knowledge of operational processes.
Physical Demands/Other Conditions:
- Ability to walk on ballast (rocks) and cross railroad tracks safely.
- Ability to climb on/off bridges and utilize proper radio procedures to communicate clearly with the train dispatcher.
- Safety boots and appropriate attire (no shorts, skirts, dresses, tank tops, or yoga pants) are required for the role.
- The role involves walking along tracks and potentially climbing hills or embankments.
- Note: This position does not have access to standard restroom facilities; employees will be subject to porta potty use on-site.
