Summary of Position
The Director of Operations is responsible for leading the overall performance of a defined line of business, including full P&L ownership, operational execution, and process development across the project lifecycle. This role ensures projects are executed efficiently, safely, and profitably while creating scalable, standardized processes that support continued growth.
The Director of Operations works in close partnership with the Director of Estimating to ensure alignment between preconstruction and execution, supporting effective handoffs, risk management, and overall project success.
This role leads team members, driving performance, accountability, and continuous improvement while fostering a culture aligned with Niles’ Core Values of Care, Trust, and Help.
This position requires a forward-thinking, results-oriented leader with strong business acumen, sound judgment, and the ability to lead and influence at all levels of the organization.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Business & Financial Leadership
- Own full P&L responsibility for assigned line of business, including revenue, margin, and cost control
- Develop and execute annual budgets, business plans, and financial forecasts
- Monitor financial performance across projects; identify risks and implement corrective actions
- Ensure all operations and projects meet or exceed profitability expectations
- Track and manage capital expenditures, operational costs, and resource allocation
Operational Leadership & Process Development
- Develop, implement, and continuously improve standardized processes across project management and field operations
- Drive operational consistency, efficiency, and scalability across all projects
- Ensure adherence to company procedures and best practices across teams
- Identify operational gaps and implement solutions to improve productivity, quality, and margins
- Coordinate with other business units to maintain alignment in policies and procedures
Team Leadership & Development
- Lead, mentor, and develop Project Managers and operations team members
- Establish clear performance expectations, KPIs, and accountability measures
- Evaluate team capabilities and align resources to support business needs
- Conduct regular meetings and performance reviews to drive engagement and results
- Build a culture of ownership, collaboration, and continuous improvement
Project & Execution Oversight
- Oversee the execution of all projects within the assigned line of business from kickoff through completion
- Ensure effective transition from estimating to operations through strong cross-functional collaboration
- Partner with the Director of Estimating during preconstruction to align on project scope, risks, and execution strategy
- Monitor project schedules, staffing plans, and workloads to ensure successful delivery
- Minimize operational and financial risk across all projects
- Support subcontractor selection and contract execution as needed
Cross-Functional & Strategic Leadership
- Partner with Safety, Finance, HR, and Executive Leadership to support business objectives
- Provide insight to senior leadership on operational performance and market conditions
- Support execution of strategic initiatives and long-term growth plans
- Promote alignment and communication across all departments
Client & Market Leadership
- Develop and maintain strong client relationships to support repeat business and growth
- Ensure high levels of client satisfaction across all projects
- Represent Niles Industrial Coatings in industry events, client meetings, and public forums
Safety & Compliance
- Partner with the safety team to maintain a safe work environment
- Ensure compliance with company policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements
Additional Responsibilities
- Travel as required
- Attend company and leadership meetings as needed
- Support special projects and other initiatives as assigned
Required Qualifications
- 10 years of leadership experience in construction, industrial services, or related field preferred
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience preferred
- Proven experience managing P&L and driving financial performance
- Strong background in project management and operations leadership
- Demonstrated experience working cross-functionally with estimating or preconstruction teams
- Proven success in building and leading high-performing teams
- Experience implementing and scaling operational processes
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, and leadership skills
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving abilities
Technical Skills
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite
- CRM / account management systems
- ERP and Financial Forecasting tools
