The Assistant Project Manager (APM) will support the planning, coordination, and execution of structural steel construction projects from start to finish. This role ensures that project milestones are met on time, within budget, and to quality standards by coordinating subcontractors, vendors, internal teams, and field crews.
The ideal candidate will have experience in structural steel fabrication and erection, strong communication skills, and the ability to manage multiple moving parts in a fast-paced construction environment.
Key Responsibilities:
Project Coordination:
- Assist the Project Manager with overall project planning, execution, and closeout activities
- Support steel detailing review, submittals, RFIs, and change order processes
- Coordinate with estimators, drafters/detailers, fabricators, erectors, and general contractors
- Track and document project progress, delivery schedules, and installation milestones
Procurement & Scheduling:
- Assist with purchasing steel materials, bolts, hardware, and subcontracted services
- Help develop and maintain project schedules and manpower projections
- Coordinate material deliveries to ensure timely fabrication and erection
Documentation & Compliance:
- Ensure all project documents (drawings, specs, change orders, etc.) are up to date and accessible
- Help maintain QA/QC records for welding, bolting, and erection per AISC standards
- Track inspection and testing reports in compliance with job and code requirements
Communication:
- Act as a liaison between field crews, project managers, clients, engineers, and subcontractors
- Attend and document project meetings, site visits, and pre-construction meetings
- Maintain regular reporting and communication with internal departments and clients
Qualifications:
Required:
- 2 years of experience in structural steel construction (fabrication and/or erection)
- Working knowledge of construction documents, AISC codes, and steel erection procedures
- Strong proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook) and project management software (e.g., Procore, MS Project, or similar)
Preferred:
- Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or related field — or equivalent field experience
- Familiarity with Tekla, AutoCAD, or other steel detailing platforms
- Experience with steel takeoffs, change order management, and fabrication scheduling
- OSHA 10/30-hour certification
- Experience working on commercial, industrial, or public sector steel projects
