The Role
NGA is looking for an experienced Accountant to provide ongoing accounting services to a portfolio of small-business clients. You'll take responsibility for maintaining accurate books, completing monthly closes, preparing financial statements, and communicating directly with clients to resolve questions and obtain the information needed to keep their accounting current.
This is a hands-on accounting role for someone who enjoys working with multiple businesses rather than focusing on the accounting of a single company. You'll manage recurring deadlines across a portfolio of clients and develop a deep understanding of each client's business and accounting needs.
We're looking for someone who combines strong accounting fundamentals with exceptional QuickBooks Online skills, attention to detail, client communication, and an enthusiasm for using technology to work more effectively.
What You'll Own:
Client Accounting & Monthly Close
- Manage day-to-day accounting for a portfolio of small-business clients
- Maintain accurate general ledgers in QuickBooks Online
- Perform bank, credit card, and balance-sheet account reconciliations
- Record and review journal entries and other month-end adjustments
- Complete accurate and timely monthly closes across your client portfolio
- Prepare monthly financial statements, including balance sheets and income statements
- Identify discrepancies, unusual activity, and accounting issues and work to resolve them
- Perform cleanup and catch-up accounting when needed
Client Relationships
- Serve as a day-to-day accounting contact for assigned clients
- Communicate regularly with business owners and client personnel to answer questions and obtain missing information
- Explain accounting questions and financial information clearly and professionally
- Develop an understanding of each client's business, workflows, and accounting needs
- Build trusted, long-term relationships with clients through responsiveness, accuracy, and good judgment
Portfolio Management
- Manage recurring monthly deliverables and deadlines across multiple clients simultaneously
- Prioritize work effectively to ensure client closes are completed accurately and on time
- Maintain organized client records, documentation, and workflows
- Coordinate with other NGA accounting, payroll, and tax professionals as needed
Technology & Continuous Improvement
- Serve as an expert user of QuickBooks Online
- Learn and effectively use NGA's practice-management and other accounting technology
- Look for opportunities to streamline and automate recurring accounting processes
- Embrace new technology, including AI-enabled tools, that can improve accuracy, efficiency, and client service
- Contribute ideas for improving how NGA delivers client accounting services
What We're Looking For:
Required
- Strong accounting fundamentals and demonstrated ability to maintain accurate books through monthly close and financial statement preparation
- Advanced proficiency with QuickBooks Online
- Experience managing accounting responsibilities for multiple clients simultaneously
- Strong organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to manage numerous recurring deadlines
- Excellent attention to detail and commitment to accuracy
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Comfort communicating directly with small-business owners and clients
- Strong technology aptitude and willingness to learn new systems and ways of working
Highly Valued
- Prior experience providing bookkeeping or client accounting services at an accounting firm, CPA firm, bookkeeping firm, or outsourced accounting provider
- Experience independently managing a substantial portfolio of small-business clients
- QuickBooks Online ProAdvisor certification
- Experience with account cleanup, catch-up bookkeeping, and resolving complex reconciliation issues
- Experience with payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and related small-business accounting workflows
- Experience working with clients across multiple industries
Who This Role Is Great For
- An accountant or experienced bookkeeper who enjoys working with small-business clients and wants to understand how their businesses actually work
- Someone who likes the variety and pace of managing accounting for many different businesses
- A QuickBooks Online power-user who knows how to get from messy transactions to clean, reliable financial statements
- Someone who takes ownership of deadlines and doesn't need to be reminded that a client's close is due
- A strong communicator who is comfortable calling or emailing a client when something doesn't make sense
- Someone who enjoys learning new technology and finding better ways to get work done
- A detail-oriented professional who values flexibility but also enjoys being part of a local team
Why Join NGA?
This is an opportunity to build long-term relationships with small-business clients while joining a growing accounting organization that is investing in its people and technology. You'll have meaningful ownership of your client portfolio, flexibility in how you work, and the opportunity to help shape how NGA delivers modern client accounting services.
We believe technology should make accountants better at what they do - not replace the relationships and judgment that clients value. We're building NGA around both.
