Controls Engineer

About the Opportunity
Our client, a growing engineering company in the Grand Rapids area, is seeking a Controls Engineer to join its team. This is an excellent opportunity for an engineer who enjoys working on custom automation projects from concept through commissioning. You'll gain exposure to PLC programming, robotics, HMI development, electrical design, machine integration, and customer startup while working alongside an experienced engineering team.

Responsibilities
- Design, program, and troubleshoot industrial control systems for custom automation equipment.
- Develop PLC and HMI programs using Allen-Bradley/Rockwell Automation platforms.
- Integrate industrial robots into automated manufacturing systems.
- Support machine startup, debugging, testing, and commissioning both in-house and at customer sites.
- Create and modify electrical drawings using AutoCAD Electrical.
- Collaborate with mechanical engineers, project managers, and manufacturing teams throughout the project lifecycle.
- Assist with troubleshooting and resolving customer issues during installation and startup.
- Participate in continuous improvement initiatives and contribute to engineering best practices.
Qualifications
- 2 years of Controls Engineering experience within industrial automation or custom machinery.
- Experience programming Allen-Bradley PLCs using Studio 5000.
- Experience with FactoryTalk View or similar HMI software.
- Experience with industrial robotics (FANUC preferred).
- Exposure to AutoCAD Electrical or electrical hardware design.
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to travel approximately 20-30% as projects require.
- Authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with ABB or KUKA robots.
- Experience with motion control, vision systems, or automated assembly equipment.
- Background in automotive automation, material handling, or machine building.
Compensation & Benefits
- $30-$45/hour
- Overtime paid at 1.5x after 40 hours
