Position Specific Description
This position will drive underwriting controls and specific program portfolio monitoring. Requires significant interaction with external stakeholders including program administrators, brokers, reinsurance brokers and reinsurers. Responsibilities can also include direct handling of Affiliate or Non-Affiliate insurance programs. Will serve as the conduit of underwriting information exchange and review with Actuarial, Finance and Accounting, Claims, Operations. Compliance, Legal and Business Development – Portfolio Management teams. The position will report to the Chief Underwriting officer and may also include direct reports.

This position will manage a team of underwriters and/or actuaries, and have responsibility for multiple underwriting books of business. This employee would manage customer and broker relationships, and have budget authority over their organization.

Job Duties & Responsibilities
- Establishes and drives program and reinsurance monthly/quarterly oversight and review process including calls with external stakeholders to drive required improvements and information exchange to achieve profitability targets
- Establish the foundation for an appropriate Underwriting Control Framework and documents all underwriting process and procedures and controls for non-affiliate opportunities including onboarding requirements and monthly/quarterly bordereau underwriting and claims reviews
- Coordinates and participates with underwriting segment heads in quarterly reinsurance updates for each program
- Extensive interaction sharing underwriting forecasts, updates and program modifications with Palms internal stakeholders including Finance and Accounting, Business Development – Portfolio Monitoring, Claims, Actuarial, Compliance and Legal teams
- Collaborates with Underwriting segment heads to update and document underwriting strategies, annual business plans and forecast updates
- Drive underwriting onboarding and integration process of automation tools including CRM and File Documentation Imaging systems
- Involvement of review of new business opportunities (risk taking, fronting, fee income, investments) and assignment of lead underwriting responsibilities for affiliate and/or non-affiliate opportunities as appropriate
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned

- Manages profitable book of business by implementing underwriting decisions (in compliance with state laws and company guidelines), evaluating results and conducting portfolio reviews
- Reviews integrated pictures of factors that affect profitability, growth, retention prepared by subordinates and recommends, implements and monitors necessary action plans
- Reviews analysis and reports to management and executive management
- Makes underwriting decisions to accept, decline or modify risks within assigned underwriting authority level in partnership with management team
- Executes underwriting strategy, including portfolio management and self-audits
- Regularly travels to key accounts and remains a visible presence in the marketplace by participating in industry events and/or committees
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned
- Bachelor's Degree
- Experience: 10 years specialty underwriting
- Supervisor/Management Experience: 4 years
- Master's Degree
- Certification: American Institute for Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter(AICPCU) or Registered Professional Liability Underwriter (RPLU), or equivalent
- Experience: Excess and surplus underwriting
