JOB SUMMARY:

As a Firefighter EMT Recruit with Newton County Fire Service, you will work to obtain
specific job duties related to fire suppression, fire prevention education, rescue, Hazmat
and Advanced Emergency Medical Services. A recruit will be enrolled into a training
program designed to deliver the required skills and knowledge to become certified and
licensed in the State of Georgia as a Firefighter/AEMT.

  • This position would normally operate under the direction of the Training Officer; however,
they would always follow the departmental chain of command in the Training Officer's
absence.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Will learn how to conduct searches of fire building interiors for rescue of trapped persons;
performs ventilation, overhaul, and advancement of hose lines to apply water to fire.

Will learn how to evacuate people from hazardous areas such as burning buildings,
hazardous atmospheres, damaged motor vehicles, and areas pending weather damage.

Will learn how to conduct basic phases of rescues from heights, building collapse and
extrication of injured from machinery, motor vehicles and heavy equipment.

Participates in Emergency Medical Training programs to develop and maintain competency
and proficiency in basic and advanced first aid, life saving techniques and will participate in
drills, simulation scenarios and on the job activities.

Will learn how to maintain the station, grounds, and equipment/apparatus; clean and
disinfect medical equipment and restock supplies.

Will learn how to complete requisitions, reports, repair orders, and maintenance checklists
as required.

Operates a variety of general office equipment and communication equipment.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

All candidates to fill a vacant position in this classification must submit to and pass a drug-
screening test after meeting the following minimum requirements:

High school diploma or GED
Must be able to pass a fire department mandated pre-employment physical
Must complete and pass a written entry-level exam and physical agility test
Valid Driver's license
Must be 18 years of age

Education and Experience:

Any combination of education, training and experience, which provides the required
knowledge, skills and abilities, required for the job.

Ability to obtain within 12 months the following: NPQ Firefighter I, NPQ Firefighter II, NPQ
Hazardous Materials Awareness/Operations, FEMA NIMS: ICS-100, ICS-200, IS-700, and
IS-800 certificates.
State of Georgia AEMT licensure.
American Heart Association BLS CPR certification.
Successfully complete departmental physical agility test. within 7 minutes, per GA FF
Standards and Training Council.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of:

English language and grammar.
Basic mathematical skills
Microsoft Office programs

Skill in:

Use of fire suppression equipment and apparatus.
Use of Advanced medical care equipment

Mental and Physical Abilities:

Establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public.

Interpret and apply rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.

Deal courteously and diplomatically with the general public.

Work quickly under physically and emotionally stressful situations.

Work at great heights or in other hazardous situations.

Learn and apply information related to the performance of firefighting duties, including:
Fire prevention methods and techniques; Principles, practices, procedures, equipment, and
apparatus used in modern firefighting and in the protection of life and property from fire;

Safe and effective rescue techniques; Fire and ambulance radio procedures; Principles,
methods, training techniques, and equipment used in modern firefighting, rescue
operations, and medical emergency treatment; Geography of the County including major
streets and landmarks; Municipal water system and drafting techniques.

Must be physically fit with substantial physical endurance. Must be able to perform yearly
physical fitness evaluation.

While performing essential functions of this job, employee is regularly expected to stand,
walk, use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance;
stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk, hear; smell; and lift and/or move up to and in excessof
100 pounds.

Working Conditions:

While performing essential functions of this position, employee is occasionally exposed to
wet or humid conditions, work in high precarious places, fumes or airborne particles, toxic
or caustic chemicals, outdoor weather conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, risk of
electrical shock, and flame, blood, airborne pathogens and hostile or offensive patients.

Incumbent's working conditions are typically quiet but may become very loud responding to
emergency calls and at the scene of a fire or other emergency.

NEWTON COUNTY FIRE SERVICE

PHYSICAL ABILITIES TEST

The applicant will be provided with the proper PPE, Personal Protective Equipment, to perform the

following: (The applicant will begiven seven minutes to complete.)

Activity #1 Stair Climb: The applicant, while carrying a hose pack, shall walk up a flight of stairs, to the

top landing, touch the rail and descend to the bottom, place both feet on the ground, then repeat the

process two more times. Upon reaching the top landing on the third round, drop the hose pack and

proceed to activity #2.

Activity #2 Hose Hoist: After approaching the railing, the applicant is required to hoist two sections of

hose, one at a time, a 50' section of rolled 2 ½" hose up and over the railing and place them on the

platform. The applicant must use a hand over hand method. The applicant must then enter the building

and proceed downstairs and out the front door to activity #3.

Activity #3 Vent Simulator: The Applicant is required to stand on top of the tire and strike the tire 20

times with a sledge hammer using an over the head method; hands must clear the shoulder and must

maintain control of the sledge hammer at all times. Once complete, the applicant walks to the rant of

the building to activity #4.

Activity #4 Ladder Raise: The applicant shall raise a single section ladder and position against the

building and make ready to climb. The applicant must then climb the ladder to the platform and exit the

ladder. The applicant shall walk across the platform and down the stairway to activity #5.

Activity #5 Rescue Drag: The applicant must lift the rescue mannikin, drag it into the building, exit on

the opposite side and return to the starting point. Dragging the rescue mannikin by the arms or legs is

not permitted; at least 75% of the torso must be off the ground. Once complete, the applicant shall

proceed to activity #6.

Activity #6 Hose Advance: The applicant must pick up a pressurized 1 ¼" hose line and advance it to a
marked area (approximately 150'), open the nozzle and flow water until directed to stop. Time stopped.

This is the completion of the Physical Abilities Test.

Note: There is nothing that prevents an applicant from resting between each activity, however, the
rest time will be included as part of the total test time. (the clock does not stop)
