Qualifications And Requirements
- Master's Degree from an accredited college or university.
- New Jersey School Administrator's Certificate
- New Jersey Standard Nurse Certificate.
- A valid New Jersey license as a Registered Professional Nurse
- Five (5) years of successful contractual teaching or school nurse experience with attainment of tenure or eight (8) years of successful contractual experience in an urban area, three (3) years of which shall have been on a recognized administrative level. This experience must have been completed prior to the filing of the application specified in this announcement.
- Letters of recommendation, which should include one (1) from the current supervisor.

Basic Functions And Responsibilities
- Sets policy, organization, and duties of departmental staff.
- Implements board policy and administrative regulations as related to departmental activities.
- Plans and initiates short and long-range planning in conjunction with district goals and objectives.
- Makes recommendations for program development and implementation.
- Provides opportunity for in-service training and other means of staff development.
- Establishes and maintains productive liaison with school administrators, nurses, school physicians, pupils, parents, and community groups.
- Establishes and maintains productive liaison with municipal, county, and state agencies involved in the provision of health services to students.
- Maintains active membership in professional organizations representing The Newark Public Schools in the health field.
- Cooperates with other departments, municipal agencies, business groups, and local institutions to mutual advantage.
- Directs the recruitment, selection, and placement of school nurses, physicians, licensed practical nurses, school nurse aides, supervisors, and clerical staff.
- Makes recommendations Plans and implements work assignments and responsibilities with regard to the appointment and assignments of supervisors, physicians, licensed practical nurses, school nurse aides, and department civil service staff.
- Prepares reports as requested or required by the Executive Superintendent, Central Office Administrators, municipal, county, or state and federal health agencies.
- Serves as a consultant to school administrators with respect to the supervision and evaluation of school nurses, school physician performance, supplies, and facilities.
- Advise, consult with and evaluate supervisory staff in the Office of Health Services.
- Plans and set up policies and procedures for the prevention and control of communicable diseases according to the rules and regulations of the Board of Education and the New Jersey State Department of Health and the Newark Health Department.
- Makes recommendations for program development and implementation. Researches and informs on trends in Health resources and materials.
- Prepares reports requested by central office administrators, local, state, and federal agencies.
- Prepares plans and specifications for new, relocated, and renovated activity or special service rooms, which include specifications for appropriate furniture and equipment. Arranges for the transfer of equipment and supplies.
- Prepares original and subsequent revised budgets for the department and advises on specialized or necessary health care needs for all schools and locations required to be budgeted.
- Prepares proposals for programs funded by state and federal grants.
- Provides a program of department services for schools.
- Serves as a leader and participant on professional committees.
- Develops and maintains a supportive relationship with principals and Departmental leaders to ensure productive outcomes for students and staff.
- Perform other duties and tasks assigned by the supervisor.
SALARY, EMPLOYMENT PERIOD AND UNION AFFILIATION
- Salary Range: $156,000 - $171,000
- Employment Period: Twelve (12) Months
- Union Affiliation: City Association of Supervisors and Administrators (C.A.S.A)
