Duties will include but are not limited to the following:
Minimum Qualifications
Six years of experience in structural steel fabrication and structural metal inspection during fabrication and construction that included radiograph review of welds and the performance and interpretation of magnetic particle, dye penetrant, and hardness tests.
Conditions of Continued Employment: You must obtain New York State Department of Transportation Certification as an Ultrasonic Testing Technician within one year of permanent appointment. Failure to obtain or maintain this certification will result in termination of employment.
Substitution: A bachelor's degree in applied science, engineering, architecture, or construction technology and two years of the required experience; or an associate degree applied science, engineering, architecture, or construction technology and four years of the required experience.
This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS). For the duration of the NY HELPS Program, this title may be filled via a non-competitive appointment, which means no examination is required but all candidates must meet the minimum qualifications of the title for which they apply.
At a future date, it is expected employees hired under NY HELPS will have their non-competitive employment status converted to competitive status, without having to compete in an examination. Employees will then be afforded with all of the same rights and privileges of competitive class employees of New York State. While serving permanently in an NY HELPS title, employees may take part in any promotion examination for which they are qualified.

Additional Pay Information
The salary range for this position includes all applicable annual components of pay which are:
Base Pay Range from Hiring Rate $67,898 up to Job Rate $91,409.
Recruitment & Retention Pay: $7,000.

Duties Description
Duties will include but are not limited to the following:
- Directing, performing, and assisting in the preparation of specifications for a variety of nondestructive tests such as - (radiograph, magnetic particle, dye penetrant, hardness, and ultrasonic), on new and existing metal structures.
- Performing quality assurance functions related to steel fabrication.
- Field visits to fabrication plants, monitoring inspection activities by contract inspectors, ensuring fabricator compliance with NYSDOT requirements regarding personnel qualifications, ensuring fabricator compliance with NYSDOT, FHWA, and industry requirements regarding material origin and quality.
- Inspecting the facilities of fabricators to ensure that they have the means and industry qualifications needed to successfully perform the contract tasks that will be expected of them.
- Reviewing steel fabrication shop drawings as steel erection procedures.
- Additional duties as assigned.
