Under the supervision of the Maintenance Supervisor 2, SG-17, the incumbent will perform journey-level sign painting activities and may supervise others in the production and repair of signs of metal, wood, and other materials used for a variety of purposes including regulating, directing and guiding highway traffic and for education and information purposes. Duties may include, but may not be limited to:
Minimum Qualifications
Four years of full-time experience* in the design, lettering and making of signs under a skilled tradesperson which would provide training equivalent to that given in a training, apprenticeship, or equivalent program; or an equivalent combination of experience and training gained by completion of technical courses in painting and sign painting at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services
When required to operate motor vehicles, candidates must possess a valid driver’s license appropriate for the type of vehicle to be operated.
Current NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation Employees only, with at least one year of permanent or contingent-permanent qualifying service as a Trades Specialist (Sign Fabrication).

Duties Description
Under the supervision of the Maintenance Supervisor 2, SG-17, the incumbent will perform journey-level sign painting activities and may supervise others in the production and repair of signs of metal, wood, and other materials used for a variety of purposes including regulating, directing and guiding highway traffic and for education and information purposes. Duties may include, but may not be limited to:
- Utilizing computers, software, commercial printers, and sign making equipment to produce signs of metal, wood, plastic, vinyl, and other appropriate materials.
- Setting up and operating mechanized equipment, such as power metal shears, punch and drill presses, and band saws, to produce blanks and structured sign components.
- Laying out designs on stencil film, cutting screen stencils, and painting signs.
- Designing and hand-lettering posters, special signs, and exhibit cards with an emphasis on artistic layout.
- Applying reflective paper/vinyl, gold and silver leaf to signs according to accepted practices and specifications.
- Removing paint from damaged signs using high pressure steam, chemicals, and other approved methods.
- Fabricating sheet metal and aluminum materials for sign figures
- Welding aluminum, stainless stee, and other metals as part of the sign fabrication
- Assisting with neighboring regions in the design and application of signage.
- Assisting in the installation, maintenance, and replacement of signs in the field as assigned.
