Duties Description
Under the supervision of the Bike Library Director and Environmental Educator 1, Recreation and Education Steward will:
- Help with daily operation of the Bike Library at Shirley Chisholm State Park. This includes:
- assessing users’ ability to ride, fitting bikes and helmets, and providing info on bike safety
- Registering riders and checking bikes in and out
- Flagging bikes that need repair and assisting with basic fleet maintenance
- Supporting special events such as bike tours, kids’ bike swap events and Glide & Ride classes.
- Help prepare and teach public and private environmental education programs at Shirley Chisholm State Park. This includes:
- Assist in facilitating summer programs, such as kayaking, Guided hikes, cleanups, and learn-to-fish.
- Help lead school field trips that focus on hands on science and nature-based learning.
- Keep materials organized and help maintain inventory.
- Assist with creating social media posts.
- Supporting special events such as Wildflower Festival and Treats on the Trails.
- Collect community science and wildlife monitoring data.
- Perform in field work to support stewardship and park operations as needed; provide excellent customer service to patrons by answering questions and disseminating information.
Minimum Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications
- Special interest or professional experience in environmental education, natural science, urban ecology or similar field.
- Strong customer service skills, able to ride a bike, or willingness to learn.
- High school diploma required.
- Experience working with children 0-15 or in an education setting.
- Knowledge of basic bike repair or willingness to learn.
- Experience kayaking, fishing, or with other forms of outdoor recreation.
- Bilingual, Spanish language proficiency.
Additional Comments
- Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license that allows the candidate to legally operate a motor vehicle in New York State as a term and condition of employment.
- Applicants must be willing to work outdoors and in all weather conditions
- Applicants must be available to work a varied schedule, including weekends, holidays, and nights. The schedule will usually be Wednesday – Sunday, 9:00am – 5:30pm but may be shifted for special events.
- Applicants must be willing to handle and care for live animals including fish and invertebrates.
- Applicants must have excellent communication skills and be willing and able to speak publicly to diverse audiences.
- Applicants must enjoy working with people of all ages and backgrounds.

Salary : $20 - $21
