About the Position
The NYS Executive Chamber is seeking a motivated professional to serve as a Senior Policy Advisor for Public Safety. This position reports to the Deputy Secretary for Public Safety and partners closely with the Assistant Secretaries for Public Safety to oversee the Governor’s Public Safety agenda, including all components of operations and policy management within the Public Safety portfolio. Additionally, the Senior Policy Advisor will work with senior leadership and staff members within the Executive Chamber, as well as the state’s public safety agencies, including the Division of State Police, Division of Criminal Justice Services, Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services, Division of Military and Naval Affairs, Department of Corrections & Community Supervision, Board of Parole, State Commission of Correction, Office of Victim Services, Division of Human Rights, Justice Center, Division of Veterans’ Services, and Waterfront Commission.
This position is 100% onsite at our office in either Albany, NY or New York City, NY.
Occasional travel between Albany and NYC and throughout NYS may be required.
Duties
Policy Research & Development Support
- Support the design of policy proposals by conducting deep-dive research into criminal justice reform, victim services, and human rights.
- Draft memos and backgrounders for the State of the State, Executive Budget, and upcoming legislative sessions.
- Track national policy trends and best practices to provide comparative data for strategic planning.
Agency Monitoring & Program Support
- Monitor the day-to-day operations and policy implementation of public safety agencies to ensure alignment with the Governor’s directives.
- Summarize high-impact regulatory and legal developments for senior leadership, highlighting potential risks or opportunities.
Stakeholder & Intergovernmental Coordination
- Assist in maintaining relationships with external stakeholders (law enforcement, advocacy groups, etc.)
- Liaise with the Governor’s DC Office to track federal legislation and identify new funding opportunities or federal policy shifts.
- Coordinate with the Division of Budget and Counsel’s office to gather necessary data for policy and communications strategies.
Cross-Agency Work
- Collaborate with other Chamber portfolios to ensure a unified approach to the Governor’s priorities.
- Develop draft briefing materials and joint policy reports that integrate input from multiple agencies and portfolios.
Knowledge & Skills
- Track record of strong analytical, organizational, and project management skills.
- Excellent written, verbal communication, research, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to manage complexity, arrive at the appropriate solutions and insights and synthesize key findings in a rapid fashion.
- Commitment to public service.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
Minimum Qualifications
- A Bachelor's degree and at least 5 years of relevant public safety experience.
- A Master’s degree or JD may substitute for one year of experience.
Employment with the New York State Executive Chamber is contingent upon the successful completion of a comprehensive background investigation.
Pay & Benefits
The salary for this position is $115,000-$130,000 annually.
