The Research Scientist (RS) 4 (Toxic Substances) will serve as the Chief of the Exposure Assessment and Reduction Section in the Bureau of Toxic Substance Assessment (BTSA). This position is responsible for leading a team of environmental health professionals in evaluating public health risks from exposure to harmful chemicals and other health hazards through a variety of human activities, including fish and wildlife consumption, growing of food crops, use of pesticide products, and energy generation and use. This position will serve as a scientist leader providing direction and guidance to ensure the section conducts scientifically robust exposure assessments and develops advice to reduce harmful exposures and protect public health.
The RS 4 (Toxic Substances) will also serve as a liaison to partner organizations, including Federal, State and local agencies, and will ensure productive collaborations with these organizations to accomplish program goals. Additionally, the incumbent will represent the Department in interactive forums (public meetings and hearings, work groups, etc.) to provide information on environmental exposures, potential health outcomes and prevention options. They will also ensure timely and appropriate responses to public inquiries and legislative proposals relevant to the section’s programs.
As a section chief, this position will be responsible for development and coordination of all programs in the section, including grant development and oversight; project planning implementation and reporting; maintenance of a competent and adequate workforce; and assignment of work duties, project prioritization and staff supervision.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
Research Scientist 4 (Toxic Substances), Grade 27: a bachelor’s degree in toxicology, environmental health sciences, biochemistry, biology, chemistry, epidemiology, immunology, industrial hygiene, or pharmacology, AND at least five years of relevant post-degree professional research experience in an appropriate field.
Substitutions: a master's degree in an appropriate field may substitute for one year of post-degree professional research experience; a doctoral degree in an appropriate field may substitute for an additional year of post-degree professional research experience.
Preferred Qualifications: The preferred candidate will have the ability to critically evaluate and interpret scientific studies and data. They will possess the knowledge of chemical or physical environmental agents and their public health implications in program areas such as pesticide registration, energy development, fish/wildlife/produce consumption and exposure reduction and independently apply scientific knowledge to problems/issues in a manner which facilitates policy decisions.
The incumbent will have experience conducting human health risk assessments; excellent written and oral communication skills for both technical and general audiences; strong data management and analysis skills; and good organizational and supervisory skills.
