Scenery Overhire

The Scenery Department of The Public Theater is looking for energetic and hard-working carpenters, scenic artists, and run crew to expand the overhire crew list. We are interested in creating a team with a variety of skills and knowledge and will prioritize enthusiasm, flexibility, reliability, and a willingness to learn above theater experience. However, construction or painting experience of some kind is required.

This position is paid hourly, with overtime after 40 hours per week, and our typical starting rate is between $25-$27/hr. This is a freelance job and the duration of work offered will vary, but the standard schedule for Carpenters and Scenic Artists is 8:30am-4:30 PM. Run Crew schedules fluctuate but are typically evenings, weekends, and occasional weekday rehearsals. Please review the available positions below:

Scenic Carpenter

  • Knowledge of standard (wood) construction practices and techniques
  • Knowledge of job site safety
  • Ability to read a construction drawing
  • Proficient in the safe operation of saws, power tools, pneumatics, and hand tools
  • Comfortable working on ladders, genie lifts, and scaffolding (training will be given)
  • Able to lift/carry 50lbs
  • Experience with rigging, automation, welding (MIG), or general metalworking a plus

Scenic Artist

  • Proficient in the application of paint and other surface treatments (texture, glaze, stain, etc.)
  • Knowledge of appropriate cleaning techniques for scenic tools (brushes, rollers, trays, sponges, etc.)
  • Ability to apply highlight and shadow, texture, age, grime, and other faux treatments to various build surfaces, usually wood, metal, or foam.
  • Knowledge of color theory and color mixing a plus
  • Experience with foam carving or stretching and painting soft goods a plus

Run Crew

  • Knowledge of basic carpentry and/or construction
  • Show Cues may include operating any moving scenic elements, striking or setting Props, or assisting with quick changes or backstage movements
  • Ensure preset of the stage, including sweeping, vacuuming, and mopping of stage deck and backstage areas
  • Organizing and ensuring that on-stage and off-stage areas are clean, organized, and “actor safe” at all times
  • Minor repairs and paint touch-ups of the set throughout the run as necessary
  • Continual safety check and upkeep of all moving parts and constructed scenery
