What are the responsibilities and job description for the Digital Forensics Aide position at New York City Department of Investigation?

The New York City Department of Investigation ("DOI") is one of the oldest law enforcement agencies in the country; its mission is to combat municipal corruption. DOI serves the people of New York City by acting as an independent and nonpartisan watchdog for New York City government, City agencies, and City employees, vendors with City contracts, individuals and entities that receive City funds.

The Department of Investigation is actively seeking a skilled Cyber Investigations Intern to join our dynamic team. In this role, you will play a vital part in supporting a range of confidential investigations. You will be exposed to hands-on experience retrieving, reviewing, and analyzing digital evidence from diverse electronic devices. These devices can include laptops, desktop computers, servers, mobile devices, tablets, and CCTV systems. You will also gain unmatched experience in establishing and maintaining the chain of custody for digital evidence, logging and securing property, aiding in computer-related search warrants, and collaborating closely with a dedicated team of investigators and consultants to advance our investigative efforts. You will also work alongside the Agency's Cyber Investigation Unit, which is responsible for leading CyberSecurity related investigations as well as conducting Open Source Intelligence (OSINT) research for investigative staff.

Aid in CyberSecurity related investigations
Assist in recovery and analysis of digital evidence
Conduct social media research in connection to active investigations
Aid staff in the maintenance of evidence and chain of custody

If selected, the college aide will be fingerprinted and undergo a background investigation.

Minimum Qualifications

For Assignment Level I:
Matriculation at an accredited college or graduate school. Employment is conditioned upon continuance as a student in a college or graduate school.
For Assignment Level II (Information Technology):
Matriculation at an accredited college or graduate school. Employment is conditioned upon continuance as a student in a college or graduate school with a specific course of study in information technology, computer science, management information systems, data processing, or closely related field, including or supplemented by 9 semester credits in an acceptable course of study.
For Assignment Level III (Information Technology Fellow):
Matriculation at an accredited college or graduate school. Employment is conditioned upon continuance as a student in a college or graduate school with a specific course of study in information technology, computer science, management information systems, data processing, or other area relevant to the information technology project(s) assigned, including or supplemented by 9 semester credits in an acceptable course of study. Appointments to this Assignment Level will be made by the Technology Steering Committee through the Department of Information Technology and Telecommunications.

SPECIAL NOTE
Maximum tenure for all Assignment Levels in the title of College Aide is 6 years. No student shall be employed more than half-time in any week in which classes in which the student is enrolled are in session. Students may be employed full-time during their vacation periods.


Preferred Skills

Basic knowledge of digital forensics Basic knowledge of cyber security principles Proficiency in basic computer applications, including MS, preferred knowledge of forensic tools Strong interpersonal, logistical, organizational, time management and writing skills Willingness and motivation to learn and implement new skills

Residency Requirement

New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County. To determine if the residency requirement applies to you, please discuss with the agency representative at the time of interview.
