Senior Digital Forensics Examiner | Civil Litigation
Black Dog Forensics | Spring, Texas | Full-Time | In-Office
About Black Dog Forensics
Black Dog Forensics provides ethical, thorough digital forensic investigations that help clients make informed decisions in civil litigation, business disputes, and other complex matters. We serve attorneys, businesses, corporations, and governmental agencies throughout the United States and abroad, turning digital evidence into clear, defensible findings.
Who We’re Looking For
We are seeking an experienced digital forensic examiner with a strong background in civil cases, particularly intellectual property theft, trade secret misappropriation, departing employee investigations, employment disputes, breach of contract, and business fraud.
The ideal candidate can independently manage complex examinations, work closely with attorneys, and explain findings through clear reports and testimony. We value sound judgment, attention to detail, confidentiality, and a commitment to objective analysis.
Prior professional experience as a digital forensic examiner is required. Candidates must be local to the Spring/Houston area and able to work in our Spring office.
Position Summary
The Senior Digital Forensics Examiner will preserve, acquire, and analyze digital evidence in support of civil litigation and corporate investigations. You will manage assignments from intake through reporting and testimony, helping clients understand what the evidence establishes and where limitations remain.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct forensic examinations of computers, mobile devices, email, cloud accounts, and other digital evidence sources.
- Investigate suspected theft or misuse of proprietary information, including file access, copying, transfers, deletion, and use of external storage or cloud services.
- Reconstruct user activity and timelines relevant to civil disputes and corporate investigations.
- Coordinate with attorneys and clients to define objectives, scope, preservation needs, and deadlines.
- Maintain evidence integrity, chain of custody, and complete examination documentation.
- Prepare clear, concise reports that distinguish supported findings from assumptions and limitations.
- Review opposing forensic reports and identify methodological issues, inconsistencies, or gaps.
- Provide expert support for depositions, hearings, and trials.
- Manage multiple matters independently while communicating progress, scope changes, and technical challenges.
- Contribute to laboratory procedures, quality improvement, and technical troubleshooting.
Why Black Dog Forensics
At a large firm, senior examiners often spend their days on volume work. Here, you’ll handle the cases that matter: trade secret theft, departing employees, and business disputes where your findings shape the outcome.
- Real casework, start to finish. You’ll own matters from intake through testimony and work directly with the attorneys, not through layers of project managers.
- A small team that backs you up. Your work gets peer review, and your input on lab procedures changes how we operate.
- Access to all necessary tools.
Required Qualifications
- More than three years of digital forensic investigative experience involving civil cases, with prior professional employment as a forensic examiner.
- Demonstrated experience investigating intellectual property theft, trade secret misuse, departing employee activity, or comparable civil matters.
- Proficiency in computer, cloud, and mobile forensic acquisition and analysis methods.
- Strong working knowledge of forensic tools, including their capabilities, limitations, and suitability for specific examinations.
- Understanding of operating systems, file systems, and artifacts used to reconstruct activity.
- Proven ability to manage examinations from intake and evidence collection through analysis, reporting, and testimony.
- Excellent report writing and the ability to explain technical findings to nontechnical audiences.
- Experience working directly with attorneys and clients to address case objectives.
- More than five documented deposition and/or courtroom testimony appearances (preferably at least two of each).
- At least one relevant certification, such as CFCE or equivalent.
- Local residence in the Spring/Houston area and availability to work primarily in our Spring office.
Work Environment
This position is primarily based in our Spring, Texas office. Occasional work at client locations may be required, with anticipated travel of less than 15%.
