What are the responsibilities and job description for the Safety Specialist position at New South Express?
Essential Duties:
- Responsible for daily ISO 14001 Environmental and Environmental Management System (EMS) Activities
- Participate in all environmental compliance audits
- Storm water pollution prevention (SWP3)
- Spill control and countermeasures
- Provide environmental expertise for new projects and project improvements.
- Lead continuous improvement efforts and assess management of change requirements
- Foster and develop environmental and safety policies and procedures
- Train and assist department leaders to maintain environmental data collection and risk minimization activities
- Ensure compliance with all federal, state and customer environmental regulations or requirements, including recordkeeping and preparing internal and external reports.
- Conduct internal audits to ensure EPA compliance
- Prepare and submit environmental regulatory compliance reports, including SERC, SARA, Title V, SPCC, SDWA and NPDES reports
- Compile and analyze environmental data collected by contractors or site departments and determine compliance and data trends
- Recommend, coordinate, and review associate educational and work practice programs on environmental topics
- Track Waste and Recycling efforts for Company.
- Coordinate with outside vendors – waste and recycling disposal
- Support business plan goals: develop and monitor tasks to ensure goals are achieved
- Act as a role model for all associates
- Responding to spills, clean-up, and disposal
- Community involvement (i.e., Adopt-a-Highway, etc.)
- Completes reports in a timely manner; prepares presentations for all levels when necessary.

- Conducts on-site reviews and audits of operations and facilities.
- Develops and implements incident investigations, data analysis, and recurrence prevention programs and procedures using effective problem-solving methods.
- Compile and report accident summaries and reviews.
- Develops policies and procedures to ensure compliance with regulations and guidelines in alignment with our safety management systems.
- Train and assist leaders in accident and injury investigations.
- Interface with regulatory agencies, committee members, and management staff to formulate corrective actions.
- Compile, analyze and prepare Executive Scorecard Presentations, Weekly Executive Presentations, Departmental Business Plan, and other Presentations as needed
Required Qualifications:
- 1-3 years’ experience in Environmental, Health and Safety fields in a manufacturing or warehousing environment
- OSHA 30 Hr. General Industry
- Knowledge of environmental recordkeeping requirements a must
- Excellent communication, both verbal and written, as well as organizational skills
- Ability to interact professionally within the company and with the customer, vendors, and associates
- Must be flexible to work different hours as needed by the department/business
- Intermediate computer skills including Microsoft Office programs (i.e. Excel, PowerPoint, Word, etc.
- Ability to create spreadsheets, compose correspondence, manage databases, and create presentations, etc.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Associates or Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science or related disciplines
- Knowledge of government environmental compliance regulations and procedures.
- Knowledge of Safety reporting compliance
- Strong working knowledge of ISO14001
