JOB SUMMARY: Under general supervision, ensure all necessary equipment is available and ready to use for swimming and pool events. Provides swim instruction and water safety to students of all skill levels and age ranges based on their needs while embodying the values of New Settlement Community Center. Maintains safe swimming conditions in the pool, deck, and surrounding areas. Creates a safe and positive atmosphere that welcomes and respects all individuals and promotes safety per New Settlement's mission, vision, policies and procedures. Builds positive relationships with members and program participants through effective listening and verbal skills and creatively finds ways to connect them to one another and the community.
Job Duties include but not limited to:
Water Safety Instructor
- Conduct classes in a fun and gentle environment, following current teaching methods, policies and safety and emergency procedures as detailed in the New Settlement Community Center training manual, and as directed by the Aquatics Director.
- Attend staff meetings and in-service trainings as requested by Aquatics Director or Center Director.
- Cleaning up pool equipment at the end of shifts.
- Complete assignments such as certificate signing and progress reports prior to the specified deadline.
- Able to switch to the role of a Lifeguard if requested by management.
Lifeguard
- Maintains active surveillance of the pool area, checking for hazardous conditions when arriving.
- Knows and reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with NSCC policies, procedures, and completes related reports as required.
- Knows, understands, and consistently applies safety rules, policies, and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area.
- Maintains accurate records as required by the NSCC and/or the state health department code.
- Performs equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available as needed.
- Performs chemical testing when not guarding, as required, and takes appropriate action.
- Cleans pool equipment at the end of shifts and clean sup spills or messes left by community.
- Properly cleans and reconstructs the pool vacuum when instructed by shift supervisor or Aquatics Director.
- Works a flexible schedule that may include holidays and weekends as required by business needs and as requested by management.
- Able to switch to the role of a Water Safety Instructor, if requested.
Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:
- Current Lifeguard or equivalent with two years’ experience.
- Must have experience teaching.
- Basic life support, First Aid, CPR, AED Certified (American Red Cross Preferred). Current preferred - or ability to obtain within 90 days of employment.
- Child abuse prevention training within 30 days of hire date.
- Ability to maintain certification-level physical and mental readiness.
- Must demonstrate lifeguard skills per NSCC standards.
- Work a flexible schedule that may include holidays and weekends as required by business needs and as requested by management.
- Enthusiastic, assertive personality with strong relationship and customer service skills.
- Effectively communicate with customers and employees. Bi-lingual (English/Spanish) is a plus.
- Follows schedules and enforces safety procedures.
- Able to demonstrate swim strokes appropriately.
- Work in an environment where noise levels are usually moderate to high and stand in the water for up to 5 consecutive hours.

- The ability to physically perform all skills required of a lifeguard.
- Hear noises and distress signals in the aquatic environment, including in the water and anywhere around the zone of responsibility.

- See and observe all sections of an assigned zone or area of responsibility.

Employment is at will and employees will undergo 45- and 90-day check-ins during their 90-day probationary period.
