Store Manager
POSITION DESCRIPTION
The New Museum is seeking a Store Manager for its expanded retail program. The New Museum Store is a destination for a unique and eclectic selection of contemporary art books and gifts that are an extension of the Museum’s mission of “New Art, New Ideas.” We procure engaging and thought-provoking gifts, books, and two-and three-dimensional art objects; we are focused on artist designed products and artist collaborations.
The Store Manager reports to the Director of Visitor Experience (DVE) and oversees day-to-day Store operations and supervises the Web and Inventory Coordinator. In partnership with the Visitor Experience Manager (VEM), this role helps lead a team of full- and part-time Visitor Experience Associates.
The Store Manager work hours include weekends, holidays, evenings and encompass managing and staffing Museum Store events, pop-up shops, offsite events and projects.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Store, Cash, and Inventory Management
- Manage the daily Store operations delivering a welcoming, high-quality visitor experience that reflects the Museum’s mission and program.
- Serve as a visible, on-site leader in the Store, engaging directly with visitors and supporting the team throughout daily operation.
- Maintain strong visual merchandising standards in collaboration with the DVE.
- Manage purchasing, inventory control, interdepartmental transfers, and loss prevention protocols ensuring compliance with Museum procedures.
- Conduct regular physical inventory counts.
- Manage the online Store operations including fulfillment and customer service, as needed.
- Support the DVE on artist collaborations, product development and marketing projects.
- Work with External Affairs, IT, Security, and Maintenance to support Store needs.
- Manage the ordering of shipping and Store supplies.
- Monitor sales and buying trends and make recommendations to DVE on strategy adjustments as needed.
- Assist with other Visitor Experience Department and retail duties and initiatives as needed.
Staffing
- Recruit, hire, onboard, train, and supervise VE staff in partnership with the VEM.
- Co-manage Visitor Experience team members to provide day-to-day management and scheduling of the VE team.
- Foster a collaborative, accountable, and sales and hospitality-focused VE team culture; provide timely and constructive feedback as appropriate.
QUALIFICATIONS
2 years of retail management experience, including team leadership and operational oversight (sales, merchandising, inventory, P&L).
Strong interpersonal and communication skills; comfortable engaging diverse audiences, including artists and creative collaborators.
Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, customer-facing environment.
- Experience with point-of-sale and inventory management software
- Proven track record in customer service, cash handing, and loss prevention.
- Passion for contemporary art.
- Consistent weekend availability.
- Ability to walk, reach, stoop, kneel, crawl, and regularly lift, push, and pull up to 40 pounds.
- Ability to maneuver in the Store and other confined spaces with ease.
- Working knowledge of HTML, Adobe Photoshop, and MS Office Suite preferred.
- Book and/or gift buying experience is a plus.
This position will work a Sunday to Thursday schedule (off Fridays and Saturdays).
